Notes for: Washington Hunt Beaudine

The information below is from K Smoot on Find A Grave. I'm guessing K Smoot is a family member. This gives Emma's maiden name as Davis, not Smith.

Emma Davis married William Croley or Crowley on 6 December 1865 in New York City. They had four children that I know of: A stillborn infant born 26 Sept 1866, William Pryor born 21 Aug 1867, Theodore Thomas born 29 June 1870, and Sarah "Sadie" born in November 1873.

Emma married Washington Hunt Beaudine twice. According to family records, they were married on 5 December 1880 in New York City (but I don't have any official documents to back that up, just a handwritten date in a family notebook) and then again on 16 October 1894 in Hoboken, New Jersey. They had two children: May Emma Carlton Beaudine born 12 November 1881 and Washington Brooks "Wash" Beaudine born 22 February 1884.

All five of Emma's living children took on the last name of her second husband.

Emma died on 2 August 1910 in the Bronx from cancer of the uterus, according to her death certificate.

Also from K Smoot:
Yes, there was some serious family drama so they changed their names a lot. But Benjamin Thomas Davis and Mary Prior are indeed her parents. The 1894 marriage record says Thomas and Mary Prior as I read it. But even if wasn't, one of her brothers, James Thomas Pryor Davis was a con man, bigamist, and a gangster and was shot and killed during a cash/fraud deal gone wrong. Another brother, William Theodore Davis was also a gangster but never went to jail as far as I can find out. Her youngest sister Mary Eliza Clara Davis married as her first husband, Dutch Heinrich (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Heinrichs) who started the Hells Kitchen Gang.

From Ronny Bodine (Dec. 23, 2022):

Mary Emmaline Davis was the daughter of Benjamin Thomas Davis (1811-1868 Manhattan) and Mary Prior (1811-1875 Manhattan). They had married 22 April 1833 in Dixton Newton, Monmouthshire, Wales.

According to a note by Kelly Smoot on Family Search (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KGSH-B4B), Emma distanced herself from her family over the years, eventually using her mother's maiden name as her own.

Emma was 1st married to William Crowley who died before June 1880. The couple had three children, William (1867-1905), Theodore (1870-1908) and Sarah (1873-1938). These children were raised by Washington and Emma Beaudine and thereafter bore the name Beaudine which passed on to their descendants.
