Notes for: Oliver P. Burdine / Bodine

As the youngest child of Francis Bodine, Oliver was born after the death of his father. His stepfather and mother raised him. In 1870 and 1880, Martha appears as the head of the household, with Oliver nowhere to be found. In 1900 and 1910, she is reported as a widow with two of five children living. Some information says Oliver died in 1870. Other information says he died when Hannah was about five years old (about 1867). Hannah was then raised by a grandmother.

Much of the information on this particular family came from their granddaughter, Eugenia Clinton, who passed away in 1999 at the age of 93.

Mary Elmore sent me some information in October 1999 saying that Oliver only had two children by his wife: Hannah and George. The other three girls were daughters from his wife's second marriage. Mary recently passed away, but her daughter has her information.

Martha went on to have three more girls after Oliver's death. The daughters were Sarah Bodine, Mary Florence Bodine, and Rebecca Jane Bodine (see 1880 Census). Furthermore Florence also had three daughters. They may have also been named Bodine. One daughter was named Lula and currently has family in the Sevierville area. Another daughter, Belle, eventually went to live with her natural father after Florence met an untimely death. Belle began using the Clinton name when she went to live with her father. She died in 1983 without ever having been married. The name of the third daughter is not known. See file called "Oliver Bodine Family.txt".

Laura Clinton Vasut (vasut@planet.nl) has more on this family.
