Notes for: Mary Ann Jenkins

After the death of Mary Jane's husband, Wesley Bodine, she married Calvin Clinton. From the copy of Francis Bodine's will recorded June 8, 1836 in a county court of South Carolina, it states "...copy of the will of Francis Bodine dec'd, filed in the case of Calvin Clinton vs. Wm Smith & others, 25 Oct 1859 copied from papers in the Sevier County Chancery Court office, by Joe A. Sharp, July 26, 1951." Could this be the same Calvin Clinton that married the widow of Wesley Bodine, trying to settle on behalf of his stepson, William Oliver Bodine?

Dave,

I believe that you have listed the wife of Wesley Bodine (second wife of Calvin Clinton) as Mary with an unknown last name. I had not known myself, having always seen her referred to as Mary Ann Bodine.

I just recently found that she was Mary Ann Jenkins. I found this in an obituary of a daughter of Calvin and Mary, Sarah Clinton Helton Atchley:

ATCHLEY, Sarah E. age 73, b Sevier Co Tn fa Calvin Clinton b Sevier Co

mo Mary Jenkins b Sevier Co d. 1941#9506

This explains why she had Mary J. on her tombstone. I am not sure but it is very likely that she is the daughter of William and Nancy Etherton Jenkins. The Ethertons and Clintons were neighbors and seemed to marry into each others families.

Also, I think in your notes you have Calvin with a third wife, Mary Helton. I have determined that the marriage certificate for Calvin Clinton and Mary Helton does not refer to this Calvin but to Henry Calvin, who is probbly his nephew. Mary Ann Jenkins Bodine was apparently his last wife and is buried by Calvin in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Tried to double check this but couldn't get into your website.

Laura then sent me a picture of Mary's gravestone in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sevier County, Tennessee:
