From Ronny Bodine:
Erma Ewing taught the 7th grade at Euchee School, in Meigs County, during the 1926-7 school year, and noted Harlie's birthdate as 13 Jan 1913. However, throughout his life he used the date 31 October 1913 which seems to relate better to his age of 6 years in Jan 1920 taken in the census of that year.

Harlie enlisted in the U.S. Army on 27 Jan 1937 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and was assigned to Company E, 22nd Infantry, Fort McPherson, Georgia. He was honorably discharged on 11 May 1940, served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 12 May to 21 July 1940 and reenlisted on 22 July 1940 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Harlie arrived for duty in North Africa on 24 Decr 1942 and later served in Europe. He was killed in action at Normandy while a member of the 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Armored Division, reportedly when his truck was either struck by enemy artillery or drove over a mine. During his military service he was awarded the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Originally buried at La Cambe Cemetery, he was later transferred to the American military cemetery at Saint Laurent-sur-Mer, Normandy.

Hazel 'Billie' Bodine retired in July 1982 after 33 years with the DuPont Corporation in Chattanooga, Tennessee and in February 2003 from 15 years service as a switchboard operator with Memorial North Park Hospital in Hixson. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, in Chattanooga. (See her newspaper obituary in Nashville's "The Tennesseean" of 7 April 2003 and "The Chattanoogan," of 9 April 2003.)
