Walter B. "Walt" Bodine Jr., 61, and a former member of the Hopewell Township Board of Education died at his Hopewell Township home, Wednesday morning, Aug. 10, 2011, following a three year period of declining health. He was born in Bridgeton and was the son of Geneva (nee Stepp) Bodine of Upper Deerfield Township and the late Walter B. Bodine Sr. A lifelong resident of the Bridgeton area, Walt graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1968 and was a US Army Veteran of Vietnam. He served in Germany and was a clerk and later a military escort for families. He married Christine "Chris" Bodine (nee Hirst) in 1971. For 39 years, he was employed by Acme Markets and held several positions including assistant manager. He also worked in several area Acme stores before retiring in 2005. After retiring, Walt was a driver for two years for the Cumberland Area Transit System (CATS). He spent 24 years as a member of the Hopewell Township Board of Education. First elected in 1984, he spent nearly half of his tenure as board vice-president. He stepped down in 2008 and during his time on the board helped to oversee a number of school projects. He also took particular interest in all school activities and spent a great deal of time mentoring new board members. Walt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeton and was active as a coach and league vice-president at West Cumberland Little League. In addition, he served as an assistant coach for the Packers in the Bridgeton Midget Football League for five years. He served as a member of the former ParentÕs Committee at Cumberland Regional High School and loved being with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife Chris, he is survived by his mother, Geneva and her companion Jim Wilson; two children, Faith N. Bodine of Hopewell Township and Brent K. Bodine and his wife, Teri of Upper Deerfield Twp.; three grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua and Ellie Bodine; two sisters, Carol Tanimae (Tarmo) of Davenport, Fla., and Brenda Hewitt (Gary) of Upper Deerfield Twp.; one brother, Richard Bodine (Mariann) of Clearwater, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Patricia Sheppard (Thomas) of Cedarville; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Hirst (Julie) of Lecanto, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, W. Commerce and Giles Sts., in Bridgeton on Tuesday evening, Aug. 16, at 6 oÕclock where friends may call from 4 until 6. The interment will be private and cremation took place at the Laurel Lawn Crematory in Upper Deerfield Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the American Lung Association, 1600 US Highway 22, Union, NJ 07083 or to the American Heart Association , 1 Union St., Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691. Christine Anne Bodine (nee Hirst) passed away peacefully on July 28, 2014 with her family by her side. She was 64. Chris was born in Morristown, New Jersey, on February 23, 1950, to Kenneth and Hazel Hirst. She grew up in Bridgeton and spent most of her adult life in Hopewell. She was a member of Bridgeton High School's class of 1968, and she graduated from Virginia Intermont College and Glassboro State College. She married Walter Bodine Jr. in June 1971. They have two children, Faith and Brent, who gave them many happy memories. She dedicated her life to teaching, first at Bridgeton Junior High, then in the Hopewell school district for 15 years. She taught home economics and consumer education at Cumberland Regional High School for 15 years before retiring in 2012. Chris loved spending time with her family and her many friends who were like family. She was beloved Mema to her grandchildren, and loved watching them play sports and spending time at the beach. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Walt, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Faith Bodine, and son, Brent Bodine, along with his wife Teri and their children Jacob, Joshua, and Ellie. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth Hirst Jr., and her sister, Patricia Hirst-Sheppard, as well as countless other cherished relatives, friends, and students. The family will be receiving visitors between 3 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon August 6th at the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeton, 119 West Commerce Street, followed immediately by a service at 6 o'clock honoring her life.
