Notes for: Thomas Wycliffe, Sr.

The identity of this Thomas Wycliffe is not known, but he must be closely related to the Catherine Wycliffe who married Marmaduke Tunstall. His third child, Katherine Sanderson, was born in Marmaduke Tunstall's house in Wycliffe on June 25, 1645 and christened in the same house by Mr. Charles Bainbridge. Thomas Wycliffe was her godfather and Mrs. _____ Rookeby of Morton was her godmother and Christopher's sister-in-law Anne Stodart the other ... (ends there). This could be the same Thomas Wycliffe who married Anne Sanderson or maybe a relative. [[[[[This paragraph above needs editing. There are many things that don't make sense. I must have gotten it from some book, but I did not write that down.]]]]]

I wonder if this is the Thomas Wycliffe mentioned as the father of several children in England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. A Thomas Wycliffe had three children baptized at Barnard Castle: Thomas (Sep. 29, 1687), Catherine (Aug. 19, 1688), and Mary (Apr. 15, 1691). No mother was mentioned in the online records I saw, but the originals might have that. These baptism dates would match up well with this Thomas's marriage date.

I'm guessing this Thomas was born about 1655, but it could be earlier or maybe a little later. I can only find one Thomas Wycliffe in the FamilySearch records who might well fit this Thomas. That was a Thomas Wycklif christened on August 28, 1642 at Aycliffe, Durham Co., England. Aycliffe is about 15 miles east of Barnard Castle. That Thomas's father was a William Wycklif. I think 1642 seems a little early, but I guess it is possible.

There is a Thomas Whyckliffe who was born on Nov. 26, 1655 and christened on Dec. 2, 1655 in Ormskirk, Lancashire Co., England. His father was a Thomas Whyckliffe. That date does match better with when I think this Thomas might have been born, but Ormskirk seems quite a ways away from the Barnard Castle area. So that Thomas Whyckliffe is a possibility, too, but I don't think it's probable.
