Alan George Bodine Resident of Berkeley Born Dec. 25, 1935, Peoria Illinois. Died Sept. 19, 2010, Berkeley, California Alan was born in Peoria on Christmas Day, 1935 to Marcy and Laura Bodine. He had a BS in Engineering Physics from the U of Illinois and an MS in Physics from Cal Tech. Alan came to Berkeley in 1959 where he met his wife, Eloise Rippin. They were married on Sept. 16, 1960 and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary 3 days before his death from prostate cancer. Alan began his career teaching physics, chemistry, math and astronomy in Kitui, Kenya, East Africa, where he taught secondary school. Their older sons, Timothy Kimanthi and Joshua Mummo, were born in Kenya. Alan taught high school in St. Helena, CA prior to teaching in the Peralta Community College District for 27 years. He went every summer to Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite with family and friends and was active in Berkeley Folk Dancers for a number of years. He was a lifelong member of the ACLU. Upon retirement in 1995, Alan devoted himself to his love of Shakespeare. He played Egeus, the father of Hermia in "Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Contra Costa Community Theatre, and was the Soothsayer in "Julius Caesar" with Marin Shakespeare Company. He encouraged friends to attend plays and enjoyed leading his class, "Shakespeare: Out Loud and Ruminated." Alan is survived by his wife and 3 sons, his granddaughter, Anya, his sister, Mary Julia Terry, as well as numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews. A Memorial Celebration will be held on October 16, 2010 at 11am at the CalShakes Rehearsal Hall, 701 Heinz Street, Berkeley. For further information, email: alanbodine@comcast.net.
