Notes for: William ("Billy") Hunt Bodine

From Ronny Bodine:

From: Middletown Daily Times (Middletown, N.Y.) of 2 Dec 1892.
William H. Bodine, aged 21 years, employed as middle brakeman on Conductor C. N. Green's Erie train, engine 143, slipped from a oar to-day at 11:10 a.m. at the Middletown Summit and his left leg was run over between the ankle and knee. He was brought to the depot on the pilot of the engine and placed in the baggage room, where he was made as comfortable as possible until the arrival of No. 1, when he was taken to Hunt's Hospital at Port Jervis. Amputation of the leg was necessary. The young man showed great pluck. Bodine is a son of the late William Bodine, who was a well known horseman in his day. He formerly lived in Middletown, but now resides with his mother and sister at Port Jervis. He is a cousin of Conductor Thomas G. Mabee, of the Pine Bush train.

Two Uncles of "Billy" Bodine Killed by the Cars
"Billy" Bodine, whose leg was cut off by the cars at the Summit, Friday, is the third member of the family to be injured by the wheels. The first was "Billy's" Uncle, John Bodine. He was killed by an engine exploding near Craigville, about five years ago. Conductor Andrew Newkirk, who was also an uncle, was killed about that time at Fenn Horn. He stepped from between two cars directly in front of an engine and was plowed down. Young "Billy" always expected that he would meet with an accident. Wilhelmina (Hoffman) Bodine was the daughter of Henry and Mary (Schultz) Hoffman.
