Lois "Grandma Chocolate" Gardener, 86 OCEANSIDE -- Lois Gardener passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, December 3, 2009. She was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on October 3, 1923. She was the only child of Horace and Nellie Bodine. Lois attended Dorsey High School, graduating in 1941 and attended UCLA with aspirations of becoming a Spanish teacher. At the outbreak of World War II, Lois went to work at Lockheed Aircraft in an administrative position. When the war was over, she married her high school sweetheart, Lynn Gardener. They were together for 62 years until his passing in June, 2008. Lois and Lynn raised five children together while residing in Inglewood, Calif. They bought their home in Oceanside in 1974 and moved there full time in 1982. Lynn and Lois loved living in Oceanside and had many friends there. Lois was very involved in her volunteer work with such organizations as Civitan, 20 year member of Ambassador "Red Coats," Visitor Center, KOCT radio station, Sea Gaze Concerts, 4th of July parades, Christmas Boat parade, sharing at Oceanside High School information on WWII, and Oceanside Women's Shelter Thrift Store. She was Woman of the Year for 2003, State of California Assembly District 73, and also 2006 Volunteer of the Year for Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. Lois loved her friends, family and giving back to her community. Her mottos were "Live, Love, Laugh," and "Hard work never hurt anyone." Lois and Lynn were also world travelers and experienced six out of seven continents in their life together. From flying on the Concord, sailing on the Queen Elizabeth II, taking pictures of the wild animals on an African safari, going through the locks in the Panama Canal, driving the Autobahn throughout Europe, riding camels past the Great Pyramids of Egypt, or speechless in seeing the Sistine Chapel. Lois always appreciated the world and her wonderful life. Lois has left behind strong family traditions, recipes and laughter. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will forever be missed as the cornerstone of our family. Lois is survived by five children and spouses; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A private memorial service to celebrate her life is scheduled for later this month.
