Carolmae M. Mattila, 70, of Soudan, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in her home. She was born Nov. 21, 1932, in Soudan, to Bernard and Lempi (Kultala) Bodine. She was a graduate of Tower-Soudan High School and married Charles H. Mattila on Sept. 29, 1950, in Ely. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Soudan, and a lifelong Soudan resident. Carolmae is survived by her husband, Charles; children, Cathy (Chris Larson) Neault of Mountain Iron, Becky Lauer of Willmar, Chucky Mattila of Soudan, Patrice Pursky of Mountain Iron, Gloria (Douglas) Ahlgren of Bear River, Craig (Michelle) Mattila of Warba, and Keith (Kim) Mattila of Soudan; grandchildren, Nicolle (Jeremy) Schackman, Becky (Dave) Mitchell, Matthew, Michael and Jennifer Lauer, Chad, Sasha and Tiffany Mattila, and Doug III, Travis and Ezra Ahlgren; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Krystyn and Steven; a brother, Robert (Paulette) Bodine of Virginia; a sister, Dorothy Sjoberg of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Matthew; a brother, Alger Bodine; sisters, Murial Rom and Luella Hiltunen; and brother-in-law, Roger Lauer. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Soudan. The Rev. LeRoy Holmes will officiated. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Memorials are preferred. Charles H. Mattila, age 77, longtime resident of Soudan died Saturday, June 11, 2011 in the Ely Bloomenson Hospital. He was born July 17, 1933 in Ely the son of George and Sylvia Mattila. He attended school in Ely. Charles was united in marriage to Carol Mae Bodine on September 29, 1950 in Ely. Charles worked in the Soudan and Ely Pioneer underground mines, and as a shovel operator through Local 1938 at US Steel. He was also Fire Chief, Supervisor, and Maintenance Supervisor for Breitung Township. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Charles is survived by seven children: Cathy (Christopher Larson) Neault of Mt. Iron, Rebecca Lauer of Willmar, MN, Charles R. Mattila of Soudan, Patrice (Mike Haltvick) Purskey of Mt. Iron, Gloria (Douglas) Ahlgren of Cook, Craig (Michelle) Mattila of Embarrass, and Keith (Kim) Mattila of Soudan; siblings: Robert (Joyce) Mattila of Ely, David Mattila of California, and Judy Strezishar of Colorado; 11 grandchildren: Nicolle (Jeremy) Schackman, Rebecca (David) Mitchell, Matthew (Nicole) Lauer, Michael (Tasha) Lauer, Jennifer Lauer, Douglas (Teri) Ahlgren, III, Travis (Jenny) Ahlgren, Ezra Ahlgren, Chad Mattila, Sasha (Jim) Dahl, and Tiffany Mattila; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Carol Mae; three brothers: George, Henry, and Donald, and a son-in-law: Roger Lauer. Visitation will be from 6pm-8pm Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in the Bauman-Vermilion Funeral Home in Tower. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Soudan. Pastors LeRoy Holmes and Berhanu Wedajo will officiate. Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Family services are provided by Bauman-Vermilion, a Bauman Family Funeral Home, in Tower.
