Notes for: Charles Bodine

From Ronny Bodine:

In 1860, Charles Bodine was aged 10 and in 1870 aged 19, living with his parents in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. In 1900, Charles Bodine lived in Eau Claire, employed as a painter. He stated he was born in Aug 1853 which conflicts with his age in previous censuses. He reported that in 16 years of marriage his wife had borne 4 children, all then living. The Wisconsin State Census of June 1905 showed the family together in Eau Clair, but afterwards Charles and Theresa separated. In 1910, Charles Bodine, 55 reported he was single and in 1920, age 60 and single, lived in Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin employed as a painter. In 1930, age 77, he was yet living in Eau Claire.

Theresa was the daughter of William and Judith (Thomas) Moses. Teresa Bodine lived with her children 1910 in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. She reported she was married and had been so for 26 years and that of her 4 children, all were then living with her. She lived in Spokane the rest of her life. The Spokane City Directory of 1930 listed Mrs. Theresa Bodine as the widow of Charles, but Charles Bodine appears in the 1931 Eau Claire City Directory.

Charles Bodine 1853---1932

Appleton Post Crescent (Appleton, Wisc.) of 17 March 1920.
Eau Claire, Wisc.---Charles Bodine, 65 years old and a painter, had his foot snapped off and suffered probably fatal injuries here on Monday, when an elevator at the Giman & Son Co. wagon and carriage plant dropped three stories, carrying a heavy Cadillac car. J. C. Plumby and Charles Strong, painters were internally injured, but not fatally, it is believed, while Andrew Olson, who also was on the elevator, miraculously escaped with only a cut under the eye.

Despite the loss of his foot at the age of 65, Charles Bodine did survive this accident. The Eau Claire Leader of 19 March 1920 reported:
Mr. and Mrs. George Bodine of Minneapolis are in the city, having been called here on account of the serious injury suffered by Mr. Bodine's brother, Charles Bodine, when the freight elevator at the plant of Girnen & Sons Co. fell nearly three stories. While here they are staying at the home of Mrs. J. H. Tinker, sister of Mrs. Bodine. Charles Bodine, the injured man, was reported yesterday as showing increased improvement over the day before.
