Notes for: William Harold Bodine, Sr.

From Ronny Bodine:

From New York City Birth Records:
Wm. Nott Bodine, born 15 March 1874 in Brooklyn, King County to Wm. N. Bodine and Julia Ann Perrigo.

From New York City Marriage Records:
William Bodine AND Nellie White were married 21 Feb 1898 in Kings County.

From Denver County, Colorado Divorce Records:
William H. Bodine AND Gertrude Bodine were divorced 19 Jan 1932.

In 1900, William and Marian Bodine were living at 251 Washington Street in Brooklyn. They had been married 2 years and had no children. William was 26 years old and his wife was 47. William worked as a salesman. In 1910, William and Marian lived at Teaneck, Bergen County, New Jersey where William worked as a salesman in a music shop. On 12 Sept 1918, he registered for the World War I draft in Englewood, Bergen County, stating he worked as a manager of export and wholesale for M. Welte & Sons of Fifth Avenue in New York and lived in Teaneck, Bergen County. He served as Mayor of Teaneck in 1915, 1917, 1925 and 1926 and was a Councilman in 1916. By 1920, William was remarried and working as a sales manager in exports and in 1930, now married to his 3rd wife, was still living at Teaneck, but working as a sales manager for a company dealing in weights and measures. William's age was not always consistent with the passage of time. In 1900 he was 26, in 1910 he was 37, in 1920 his age was 44 and remained at 44 for 1930, perhaps not wishing it to be known that he was actually 54 and his wife was 28. He was aged 50 in April 1940, but was now a widower working as a counselor for the W.P.A. and living in the Bronx.

In the 1930 census, William's wife is named Lurania L., aged 28, born in New Jersey, of a father born in Pennsylvania and a mother in New Jersey. With such an unusual name it appears evident that she is identical with Lurania, 19 NJ, dau. of Alfred M. & Lillian Hanna, with whom she was living 1920 in Ridgefield, Bergen County, New Jersey. Alfred was born in Penn. and Lillian was born in New Jersey. And it was Teaneck, Bergen County, where William Bodine had served as mayor and was living at the time. If what William claimed in 1940 is true, then Lurania had died by that time.

Obituary, the New York Times of 30 Sept 1916.
