Francis R. Bodine of Lexington Park, MD died on July 10, 2009, peacefully at his home. He is survived by his wife Julia Owens Bodine, whom he married on November 19, 1955 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Lexington Park, MD and three sons; Kevin Bodine, (Kelly), Dr. Ken Bodine, (Kelley) and Kurt Bodine, (Beth), seven grandchildren; Kristy, Kim, Ryan, Christopher, Leah, Aileen and Owen Francis Bodine, he is also survived by his siblings; Charles Bodine of Kane, PA and Barbara Callahan of Phoenix, AZ. He was a graduate of Kane High School in Kane, PA. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bloomsburg University and a Masters Degree from the University of Maryland. He had also done graduate work at Washington University and Duke University. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp for three years during WWII, after his discharge he completed his college degree. He came to St. Mary's County in February, 1952 and was hired as a Math teacher at Margaret Brent High School. In 1955 he was appointed Principal of the new 12 grade Leonardtown School. He worked as a school administrator until his retirement in 1984. He was very beloved by his staff and students. He was a member of the Leonardtown Lions Club since 1958 and served as president for two different terms. He helped organize and was the first chairman of the St. Mary's Crab Festival and served for many years in that capacity. During his retirement he served as a vendor for Meals on Wheels for 16 years. He was also very much involved with the poor and elderly in our county through his work at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was a kind and gentle man, never critical of anyone. He enjoyed his family and his home in Town Creek. He was very knowledgeable about most sports and enjoyed golf and baseball. His most avid interest was reading. He was a member of the St. Mary's Historical Society and was very loyal to St. Mary's County. He had traveled all over Europe during his military days and later traveled extensively with his wife in the United States. He especially enjoyed the town of Fredericksburg, VA and went there frequently. We wish to give special thanks to Dr. Leon Berube and Hospice members, Barbara, Peggy and Cindy. Family will receive friends for Mr. Bodine's Life Celebration on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 5 to 8pm in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., Leonardtown, MD where prayers will be recited at 7pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 11am in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Lexington Park, MD with Father Jack Kennealy officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be; Jack Hayuda, Bob Fares, Robert Hemieleski, John Woodburn, Pat Willinburg and Paul Rose. Francis R. Bodine, 85, of Lexington Park, MD died Wednesday, July 10, 2009 at his home. Born July 1, 1924 in Moria, Pennsylvania, son of the late Francis S. Bodine and Barbara R. (Rackett) Bodine. He is the husband of Julia Owens Bodine of Lexington Park, MD. Relatives and friends are invited to Francis's Life Celebration in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with prayers recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 22375 Three Notch Road, Lexington Park, MD. Julia Owens Bodine, 83, of Lexington Park, former long term St. Mary's County elementary school teacher, died September 18, 2014. Born September 13, 1931, in Leonardtown, she was the daughter of the late William Freeman Owens and Mary Lillian Owens. She graduated from Margaret Brent High School as valedictorian in 1949. She earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Towson State Teacher's College in 1953 and returned to St. Mary's county as a first grade teacher at Leonardtown Elementary School. On November 19, 1955, she married Francis Rackett Bodine and later left teaching to raise her family after the birth of her first son, Kevin, in 1958. She returned to teaching in 1976 and retired from the profession in 1985. Throughout her career, she taught the first grade at Leonardtown Elementary School, Frank Knox School and Greenview Knolls School. A lifelong resident of St Mary's County, Mrs. Bodine was active in many charitable organizations. She was a member and past president of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She helped found and then managed the Clothing Center and Food Pantry at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, which provided for countless St. Mary's County residents, for several years. In the past, she had routinely provided meals for the residents of the Three Oaks Homeless Shelter. Mrs. Bodine was an active member of the St. Mary's County Historical Society for approximately 60 years. She was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for 60 years and served as a Eucharistic minister. Mrs. Bodine taught CCD classes for many years and acted as a Eucharistic minister for the residents of the Bayside Nursing Home. Mrs. Bodine enjoyed landscape gardening, sewing, reading, antique collecting, interior design and travel; but her greatness joy was derived from her family and helping those less fortunate in the community. She is survived by her three sons, Francis Kevin Bodine and his wife, Kelly, of Avon, Ohio, Dr. Christopher Ken Bodine and his wife, Kelley, of Champagne, Illinois, David Kurt Bodine and his wife, Beth, of Port Republic; seven grandchildren, Ryan Kurt Bodine, Kristina Marie Cole, Kimberly Meagan Terry, Christopher Bryce Bodine, Owen Francis Bodine, Aileen Riley Bodine and Leah Michelle Bodine; seven great grandchildren; and her brother William F. (Freddy) Owens of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Francis Rackett Bodine. In addition, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Charlie Owens, Margarite Owens Dorn, Madeline Owens Sickle, John Melton Owens, Rosalie Owens Russell, Evelyn Owens Chopin, Myrtle Owens Russell, Joseph Owens, Anna Owens Cramer, Janice Dunbar Cooper, James Dunbar, Franklin Dunbar and Julius Owens. Family will receive friends for Mrs. Bodine's Life Celebration on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 8PM in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A; Leonardtown, MD where prayers will be recited at 7PM.
