Notes for: Charles Nelson Bodine

It seems Charles Nelson Bodine was born either Charles Nelson Penrose or Charles Nelson Saunders. On his U.S.M.C. Enlisted Man's Qualification Card, it looks like he definitively shows this name change to Bodine from both Charles Nelson Saunders and Charles Nelson Penrose. These must be names he had used in previous paperwork with the Marines. It's not clear from the card exactly when this change happened, but it was around 1943 to 1944. His son, Cris Bodine, said, "I believe Charles commonly went by the name "Bodine" but it did not become official until he went into the Marines (see attached). I assume the name "Saunders" came from either an earlier marriage by Isabelle Penrose or maybe that was the birth father's name. I do not know."

Dave,

My Mom's maiden name is Lucille Lynelle Davis, and Charles Nelson Bodine was married to Viola Irene Olsen from 1973 to 1975. I have no information at this time about his first marriage other than he was for a short period. I also recently discovered that Charles Nelson Bodine changed his name to this when he joined the Marines. Apparently he was born Charles Nelson Saunders and I have not been able to find his original birth certificate. I am not sure how all of this went down legally with his real Mother Isabelle and his apparent 'step dad" Clarence Bodine. Apparently Doris Bodine (later Stradling) was the only full sibling (daughter) of this marriage. If you have any additional info on Charles Nelson Bodine (Saunders), I would like to know. I did not find this out until after his passing and when I obtained his military records.

I'm sorry Dave, Charles Nelson Bodine's original birthname was Penrose, not Bodine and somewhere between 1922 and 1941 it was changed from Penrose to Saunders.

Cris

Ed, Paul, and Cris all have the same mother, but Ed and Paul have a different father. I do not have that information yet. Lillian was married to someone before she was married to Charles Nelson Bodine.
