Henry A. Bowman, professor emeritus of sociology, died on December 1, 1977, in Colorado City, Texas. He was 74.
Professor Bowman was born on July 19, 1903, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Western Reserve University in 1927 and was awarded his master's degree from the same institution in 1929. He received his PhD degree in 1931 from Yale University, where he was a Sterling Research Fellow. Prior to joining the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Bowman taught at Stephens College from 1931 to 1955.
Professor Bowman taught at the University from 1955 until 1969. His courses on marriage and the family, the field in which he was an internationally recognized authority, were among the most popular offered by the University, attracting more than 500 students each semester. Dr. Bowman was the author of Marriage for Moderns, a textbook widely used in the United States and translated into several foreign languages. The book sold more than a quarter of a million copies. He also published A Christian Interpretation of Marriage and numerous articles.
In 1967 Professor Bowman was honored with the Osborne Teaching Award from the National Council on Family Relations. He also earned a teaching excellence award from the Student's Association of the University. Dr. Bowman was a Fellow of the American Sociological Association and the American Association of Marriage Counselors. A long-time consultant to the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, he was co-winner of the first award for excellence given by the Texas Council on Family Relations. The honor is now known as the Moore-Bowman Award.
