Ruth Arellen Bodine Converse, a resident of Frederick County since 1948, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the daughter of Clyde Kennedy Bodine and Hallie Marsteller. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. John Lay Converse, a scientist at Fort Detrick whom she married on August 12, 1936. Mr. Converse passed away on June 7, 1992. Mrs. Converse will be remembered for her keen interest in the world, her clear and perceptive mind and her sharp eye for value in antiques. A member of a family in which turbulent emotion was not at all unusual, she stood out for her rational and even-tempered approach to challenges of many kinds. To the end she remained in charge of herself and everything about her. Mrs. Converse was the devoted mother of A. Bryant Converse, a professional musician, of Baltimore and John L. Converse Jr., a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, of Martinsburg, W.Va. She was an Aunt to Hallie Goelet, Alex Auti, and James Maguire. She was the great-aunt to Annie Sijmonsbergen, Henry Goelet, Philip Goelet, Samantha Auti, Jack Auti, and Ben Maguire. She was a great-great-aunt to Sophia Sijmonsbergen. She was preceded in death by a niece and nephew, Arell Maguire and Gavin Maguire. She will be missed by her many friends, especially Harold and Becky Shorb. Mrs. Converse was also a great-great-aunt to the family pet, a cat named Alex McDonald. A memorial service will be held in Maine in the summer of 2008. Her interment will be at the family's convenience. Contributions may be made in Mrs. Converse's name to Frederick County Humane Society, 5712-D Industry Lane, Frederick, MD 21704 or to Schifferstadt Museum & Gift Shop, 1110 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701. Arrangements entrusted to the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home. Condolences may be shared with the family by writing to the funeral home address, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
