Notes for: Alfred VanSant Bodine, Sr.

An article, signature, and a picture of Alfred VanSant Bodine are in the National Cyclopaedia of American Biography, v. I, p. 348. The names of his parents and grandparents come from that article. He graduated in 1915 from Lehigh University. He later formed the Bodine Corporation in 1933 at Bridgeport, NJ. This is a large manufacturing company that is still in business today. He was a Presbyterian and Republican. Alfred led one of the largest men's Bible classes in the Bridgeport area. His chief recreations were hunting and fishing.

Private services for Mrs. Ethel P. Bodine, 65, wife of Alfred V. Bodine, president of the Bodine Corporation, who died yesterday in her home, Beaver Dam road, Stratford, after an illness of several months, will take place tomorrow in the Wilmot, West and Goulding funeral home, 884 Lafayette street. The Rev. Ralph Rey, minister of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate, and burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery, Fairfield. Born in Lambertville, N.J., Mrs. Bodine was active in civic affaits in Fairfield and Pridgeport. She was a past president of both the Grasmere Parent Teachers association and the Women's League of the First Presbyterian church. She was also Scholarship Chairwoman of the Women's Auxiliary of the YMCA and a member of the Southport Women's club. residents of Fairfield 37 years, Mr. and Mrs. Bodine moved to Stratford four years ago. At one time they lived in Bridgeport. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Edward F. Bodine of Fairfield and Richard P. Bodine of Easton; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Swain of Stratford; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. C. Herbert Ireland of Lambertville, N.J. and Mrs. Thomas B. Harper of Belmar, N.J. A third son, Alfred V. Bodine, Jr. was killed in 1944 while on a bombing mission over Austria.

Services will take place Wednesday for Alfred Van Sant Bodine, 71, of Beaver Dam road, Stratford, industrialist and community leader, who died Saturday. The services will be conducted at 2 p.m. in the United Congregational church with the Rev. William H. Alderson, minister emeritus of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn cemetery, Fairfield. The Wilmor, West and Goulding funeral home, 1209 Post road Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Wheeler Bodine; two sons, Edward Bodine of Fairfield and Richard Bodine of Easton; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Swain of Trumbull; a brother, Walter Bodine of Media, Pa., and 11 grandchildren.

In Dec 1950 she reported her name as Elizabeth Wheeler Allen and subsequently as Elizabeth Wheeler Bodine. She died 12 July 1993, last residence was Pompano Beach, Broward Co., Florida.
