Notes for: Daniel S. Bodine

I think his middle name may have been Samuel since only a Samuel Bodine is listed in the household of his parents in the 1860 Census of Delaware Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ.

Biography of John D. Cregar:
November 1, 1864, Mr. Cregar married Mary E. Bodine, daughter of Peter and Susan (LeFoy) Bodine. The father was born in Hunterdon County, and was a son of John Bodine, whose home was at Three Bridges. Peter Bodine was a farmer by occupation, and when Mrs. Cregar was born was living in Washington, Warren County, N. J., but soon returned here, settling in Union Township, where he bought a farm and spent the rest of his life. He was a member of the Baptist Church for a number of years prior to his death and was esteemed by all who knew him. His children were as follows: Elizabeth L,., wife of Holloway Van Sickle, of Holland Township; Daniel S., a business man of Stockton, N. J.; John T., deceased; Harriet C, who died in early womanhood; Hettie, who never married; Abraham L., deceased; Catherine, widow of Asa C. Hill, of Medina, N. Y.; Jane, widow of Ezra Dewitt, of Scranton, Pa. ; and Mary E. , Mrs. Cregar.

From St. James Lutheran ("Straw") Church, Greenwich, Warren County, New Jersey Marriage Records:
Daniel S. Bodine, 25, son of Peter Bodine AND Charlotte Starner, 24, daughter of John Starner, were married 16 Sept 1861.

Daniel Bodine lived 1900 with his wife and daughter in Stockton, Hunterdon County where he worked as a coal merchant. He reported that in 38 years of marriage his wife had borne one child, their daughter Otella, who was living with them. In 1910-1920, Charlotte and Otella Bodine lived together in Stockton.

On 17 April 1907, Otella S. Bodine was granted administration on the estate of Daniel S. Bodine.

Obituary, Trenton Evening Times (Trenton, N.J.) of 9 April 1907.
Stockton, April 9.---Daniel S. Bodine, aged 74 years, of this place, died at his home, Saturday, after an illness of about two weeks of paralysis. Although he had been in failing health for more than a year he had been able to attend to business until two or three months ago. The funeral was held this morning with services in the First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. William J. Bone. Interment was at Riverview cemetery. Mr. Bodine is survived by a widow and one daughter, Miss Othella, who resides at home. Mr. Bodine had conducted a coal yard in this place for many years and was also a dealer in live stock.

Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Bodine, widow of Daniel Bodine, were held yesterday from the funeral home of Poulson & Van Hise, 408 Bellevue Avenue. The Rev. John McNab, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, assisted by the Rev. William H. Woolverton, of Lambertville, officiated. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, Lambertville, under the direction of C. Walter Green.
