Notes for: John Burk

John Burk supposedly married Euphemia Barthella Bodine. She is probably the daughter of James Bodine, and sister of Mary Ann Bodine, wife of William Longley, and sister of Francis Bodine. See Sharon Kletzien and Becky Byars' messages. There was a John Burk who married an Etha Bodine on September 30, 1797 in Montgomery County, Virginia. Her guardian and surety was William Longley.

Here is a message I received from Doris Johnston:

Dear Sybil,

...You ask for source of the information on Lydia Bodine. It came from a descendant who wrote to me, but I have a ft. thick stack of "work in progress" -- it may be in there, but it isn't in my hanging file on Bodine, which I've just looked at.

As you know, there were enough Bodines in Hunterdon Co., NJ and Loudoun Co., VA, as well as further east in NJ earlier, with similiar names, that it's hard to distinguish among them.

I've tried several ways to find some descendants of Effie and John Burk, in GA, would love to ask them for more information. But no luck.

We aren't positive that Effie and Mary Ann (who md. Wm. Longley in Loudoun Co., VA, man who was surety for Effie's marriage to John Burk) were daughters of James Bodine and his wife Mary ____. I've been working more on the Bodine ancestry, trying to sort out who some of the Burks were in the counties I've researched, and it's quite a tangled web, to me, since Esther Bridon married two men named Jean or John Bodine, and some researchers disagree as to which child by which wife.

I've worked the last couple days on Bodines, but not to the point of updating my web site yet. Dave Bodine is always helpful, and I'm sorry, wish I could tell you more but I can't right now.

Hello, Doris,

I have been looking at your web page, and reading your notes on the Burks/Bodines/Longleys.

I may have written to you before, but if so, it's been awhile.

I believe that my husband's GG GMother, Jane Burk, was the daughter of John Burk and Effie Bodine. I haven't found any real documentation for that yet, but there is sure a lot of circumstantial evidence for it! As, for example, Jane named her first son John, and her youngest daughter Effie! (She married Richard Wilson).

I notice that you show James Bodine (Effie and Mary Ann's Father) as having a daughter named Lydia. Could you please tell me where you obtained that information, and is it documented, etc.? I believe that Lydia may be the one who married Jonas Moon, and some say that she was also married to a Burk for a very brief time before he died, then later married Jonas. I have long believed that Lydia Moon was Effie's sister, and any information you could give me about her (especially found in documented records) would be much appreciated. Do you have any records on who your Lydia Bodine married?

Lydia Moon named one of her daughters Effie, by the way, and Effie and John Burk named their youngest son Jonas, which I believe was for Rev. Jonas Moon, Lydia's husband.

I have been doing research on the Burks for the past three years or so, and just learned about Effie Bodine a little over a year ago. Since then, we have gathered a lot of information on the Bodines and related families, but finding out the true facts on Lydia Bodine has been hard up until now. Dave Woods once told me that he had records showing a marriage of Lydia Bodine to Jonas Moon, but I haven't been able to find it (FTM CD), and when I wrote to ask him more about it, he never answered me.

Here's what we know about John and Effie Burk's children so far:

Hannah, b 1798, married Samuel Blair.

Elizabeth, b. ca 1800, married James (or John) Whitmore.

Jane, b ca 1801 (believed to be their daughter), married Richard Wilson.

James, b ca 1804, married Nancy Longley.

John, b 1806, married Mary Brewster.

Mary, b ca 1814, may have married Maples.

Jonas, b 1815, married Susanna Holms.

William Preston, b 1817, married Adaline Carter.

John Burk was 31 when he married Effie (name spelled that way on census, tax and land records), and was also about 15 years older than she, so I believe that he had been married before, and may have had several children by a first marriage. I don't have any proof of that, it's just my theory. If such children do exist, we haven't yet found them.

I think it's also possible that John and Effie also had other children as yet unknown to us. There is an 8-year gap between the births of John and Mary, and it's very possible that other children were born during that time. Of course, there may have been some who died young. Or...we may yet find others we don't know about as of now.

Would love to hear from you.
