Notes for: Eliza 'Catherine' Bodine

Her official name seems to be Eliza Catharine Bodine, but she went by Catharine or Catherine.

Besides the message below, John Carland also sent documents showing an Anthony Carland was listed in the 1842 Cincinnati City directory as a "spruce beer maker." And the other document seems to be an index card abstract of his death certificate where it says he died of "consumption" which I guess is TB. He was a white male age 68 when he died on Feb. 19, 1870. He was born in Ireland. He might have died at home on 260 Dayton Street, but that part I'm guessing at. Or maybe that is where the funeral was held - given the next paragraph below.

From his obituary here from Ronny below and the abstract John sent above, the death date does appear to be Feb. 19, 1870.
From Cincinnati Commercial Tribune of Sunday, 20 Feb 1870.

Mr. Bodine--

The entry below, from your website, is, I believe, my great-great grandmother Catherine. She married my GGGF Anthony Carland, born in Ireland in 1804, in Hamilton, Ohio, in the early 1840s. They had four children, my great grandfather, John, his brother Frank, and sisters Elizabeth and Harriete (Hattie). Anthony died in 1870 and two years later Catherine and her children, and Peter Smith, married to Elizabeth, moved to Little Rock. There Catherine ran a lodging house for many years, then when very elderly moved in with the Smiths, and died in 1905, age 92. Frank went into business, occasionally with m GGF John, who in middle age became a policeman, dying in 1914, rank of sgt. Frank was also engaged in civic affairs and was on the board of the organization that in the 1880s founded Philander Smith College, a historically black college in Arkansas.

Apparently Catherine's marriage to Anthony was her second, her first to someone named Rude. A Mary Rude shows up in a couple of censuses living with the Carlands and is listed in one as Catherine's daughter. Mary doesn't seem to have married, though more research may allow a different conclusion.

In any case, I hope next year when I can spend more time on this to find out more about Anthony, more about Catherine's first marriage, and more generally about my family's history.

Enjoyed looking at your website-came away impressed and exhausted.

All the best,

John M. Carland

Dave--

We corresponded briefly some time ago about the Carlands and Bodines. My great great grandmother was Catherine Elizabeth Bodine Rudd (sometimes appears as Rude in old documents) Carland. I just found in the 13 November 1903 Arkansas Gazette, page 4, an announcement of funeral service. This is a pretty good source and you can use it to change death date from 1905 to 1903.

Best,
John Carland

Dave--

There's always something more to find, isn't there. I thought the Gazette's rival in Little Rock, the Democrat, might have information about Catherine's death date and indeed it did. The 13 November issue states that "Mrs. Katherine Carland, aged 90 years, died at 4:45 p. mi. yesterday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Peter S. Smith [i.e., Elizabeth Smith nee Carland], 1300 Rock street." So death date is 12 November 1903.

I have no doubt that you are right about Catherine's birth name. That said, she apparently always went by Catherine (except in the Democrat's notice of her death) in her daily life, as the 1850, 1860, and 1900 censuses indicate (and 1880 census has her as "C. Carland").

The poor women suffered the first of four strokes at age 78/79 and the last a couple of weeks before her death. It's hard to see how she could have taken in lodgers after a stroke as the 1880 census says, but maybe it was a light stroke as the first one sometimes is. She is described in the brief Democrat article as being an invalid for 12 years prior to death.

The past isn't always easy to read.

Best,
John

As you may know, Maria and I moved from townhouse in Annandale to condo in Arlington in late summer. Now we are happily ensconced in our new digs. Since Cox email wasn't available in Arlington we switched to Gmail (and joined the estimated 1.5 billion others in this exclusive group). New address is bauxite7 at gmail.com, the "bauxite" part a tribute to my early years, 1944-1951, in Bauxite, Arkansas, a small, very small, village down the road from Little Rock.

Cox will take my account off the grid on or about 15 January 2020.

All the best to all of you.

Hey Dave,

Well now, I checked the first citation of the Daily Arkansas Gazette of Thursday, 12 Nov 1903 and the article read:
The funeral of the late Mrs. Catherine Carland will be held at 3 p.m. today from the residence of P. S. Smith, 1300 Rock street, the services being conducted by Rev. J. M. Beadles, pastor of the Scott street M. E. church, of which she was a member. Mrs. Carland, who died Wednesday afternoon, had been a resident of this city since 1871. She was born in New York state in March, 1813, hence was in her 91st year when she died. She was the widow of Anthony Carland, who died in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1870. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Mrs. P. S Smith, Mrs. B. E. Terry and J. W. Carland, all of this city, and Alex G. Rudd of Thibodaux, La.

As you can see the death date given is Wednesday 11 Nov 1903.

And the Arkansas Democrat of 13 Nov 1903 reported she died "yesterday" at 4.45 PM... I think the former is correct.
