Notes for: Jan Pieterszen Haring

Jan Pieterszen Haring and his father arrived in New Amsterdam on 15
Apr 1660.

He was the leader in a project to buy out the Tappan Indian rights in
a large tract of land, some 12,000 acres, lying on the west side of
the Hudson River, partly in New York and partly in New Jersey. Of the
16 shares in the syndicate, Haring took three shares for himself and
two sons. The deed to the land was signed by the Tappan Indian chiefs
17 Mar 1681 (old style, which is 1682 in the modern calendar). The
land was paid for in goods of many descriptions. When Jan died, his
sons, Peter and Cosyn Haring, each had one share in the syndicate.
When his widow remarried on 8 Apr 1685 to Daniel De Clerk, his third
share passed to his widow's new husband. (Rockland & Orange Counties,
Vol. 2:36)

The farm of Jan Pietersen Haring was 100 acres extending from the
Bowery Lane westward to beyond Bedford Street, both sides of Broadway.
