From Corpus Christi (TX) Caller-Times of 22 April 2009.
A 61-year-old Sweetwater man vacationing in the Corpus Christi area was killed Tuesday in a motorcycle accident that also sent his wife to the hospital. Marshall Bodine Sr.'s motorcycle was eastbound on Newport Pass Road off of State Highway 361 when a westbound Ford Ranger collided with it and with his wife's motorcycle, which also was headed east, said Lt. J.C. Hooper of the Corpus Christi Police Department. Bodine was pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Michael McKinney. Police said the 27-year-old driver of the Ford Ranger was distracted when the collision occurred about 11:15 a.m. Police said the motorcycles may have been traveling side-by-side on the winding beach access road, which doesn't have marked lanes. Police didn't issue any citations Tuesday, but continued to investigate. Ruth Bodine, 56, who was riding the second motorcycle, was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial. Neither she nor her husband was wearing a helmet, police said. She remained in the intensive care unit Tuesday in serious condition, Spohn spokeswoman Sherry Carr-Deer said. Kelly Andrus, of Sweetwater, said the Bodines were vacationing in the Corpus Christi area after attending an Elks Lodge seminar in Grapevine during the weekend. Andrus, an Elks member in Sweetwater, said Marshall Bodine had had been on the phone with some Elks members on Monday evening. "It's just a shock ... within 12 hours a tragedy has happened," Andrus said. "It's touched a lot of people's hearts today." Andrus, who used to work with Marshall Bodine as a welder, said he was always joking with people by sneaking up behind them or wearing wigs for humor. "He just liked to entertain people," he said. Andrus said some friends from Sweetwater were on their way to Corpus Christi late Tuesday to visit Ruth Bodine in the hospital.
