Subject: Budine Walton Reunion Photo ASA Budine

Hi Dave

By way of intro I'm Rick C Schriber Son of Charles Wendel Schriber who was son of Oscar Martin Schriber and Daisy Blanche Budine (Daughter of Leslie M Budine and Viola May and Gilbert Budine of Walton, NY).

Attached photo is one from my Grandmothers collection. Identified individuals are as ID'd on back of photo itself. Evidently only Asa and his boys and their wives had that honor. None of the younger people are identified in any way.

Have some other budine photo's if you're interested.

Rick Schriber

Here is the picture Rick sent me. My guess is that it was taken about 1911-1912. That is just a guess based on who I think some of the children belong to and who they are. Asa died in 1913; so it couldn't have been after that. As it says, it was taken on Nathan Budine's farm. That was in Walton, Delaware Co., NY.

The following birth dates are based on the census and other data mentioned just below: Birth: MAY 1838 in NY (from 1900 Census); Birth: 1840; Birth: 1841; Birth: 1839 in NY. I'm not sure which dates come from which titles below.

It looks like he also has an obituary, but no reference was given.

The following people are buried in plot 527 at the Walton (Delaware Co., NY) Town & Village Cemtery:

No info was given for grave 8.

There is a Theron C. Wood listed in their household in the 1900 Census of Tompkins, Delaware Co., NY who could be their grandson. Or he could be the grandson of a Lois E. Wood who is also listed. She is listed as being 33, having seven living children, and she is a servant. The listing is confusing. I wouldn't assume that Theron is their grandson even though it appears to say that. I am not certain that it was this Asa Budine who married Mary Jane Beagle or if it was this Asa who married Eleanor, the probable mother of Herman.

Here are some notes for Asa Budine which came from Phil Delamarter:

LDS Film #17071, 1850 Census, Andes, Delaware, NY, p. 491

Info compiled by Christina Burghart, granddaughter of Asa, supplied by Bruce C. Budine, grandson of Asa.

The 1880 US Census lists Asa Budine, age 40, living in Walton with his wife, Mary, age 36 and their children, Cyrus, age 16; George, age 14; Edward, age 11; Burt, age 7; and Malvern, age 6.

The 1900 US Census lists Asa Budine, age 62, living in Tompkins, with his wife, Elenor, age 46 and their son, Herman A., age 7. Asa and Elenor have been married for 9 years with one child.

Asa and Mary Jane are buried in Walton Cemetery, Section 1, Lot 527.

From Ronny Bodine:

According to New York federal and state censuses Asa was aged 11 in 1850, 14 in 1855, 19 in 1860, 24 in 1865, 30 in 1870, 35 in 1875, 40 in 1880, 42 in 1892, 62 in 1900, 65 in 1905 and 68 in 1910, a range from 1838 to 1850. His newspaper obituary in July 1913 reported his age as 73 and the year of his birth recorded on his grave marker was 1840. Asa was also recorded as the next child after his brother John in 3 censuses (1850, 1855, 1860). If he was born in May (from the 1900 census) 1840, then his age at death was correct and 1840 was his birth year in 3 censuses (1870, 1875 and 1880).

Obituary, The Walton Reporter (Walton, N.Y.) of July 1913..
Asa Budine died suddenly Sunday morning, July 6, at his home in the Munn extension, aged 73 years. Mr. Budine had been in ill health a long time. In May his home on Dryden Brook burned to the ground, and since then Mr. and Mrs. Budine have been living at their home in Walton village. Sunday morning, while still in bed, he asked his wife to get him a cup of hot water. These were the last words he spoke, as he was stricken almost immediately afterwards. The funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 o'clock at the house, Rev. I.M. Foster officiating. Burial in the Walton cemetery. Mr. Budine is survived by his wife and six sons. They are: Nathan, George, and Burton of Pines Brook, Cyrus, who lives at the Oxbow, Leslie M. of Pine's Brook, Herman Budine of Loomis. Mr. Budine was born in the town of Andes and spent his boyhood there. He had been a resident of Walton some 35 years, living on a farm at Pine's Brook for years, and later moving to Dryden where he owned a place. He was married three times. His first wife, who was Miss Mary Beagle of Walton, died about 23 years ago. Later he married Miss Eleanor Christian and after her death, Mrs. Augusta Snyder of Gilboa, who survives him.

Obituary, The Walton Reporter (Walton, N.Y.) of Sept 1928.
Augusta Cartwright Budine died early Thursday morning, Sept. 27, at the home of her stepson, Leslie Budine, with stoppage of the bowels. She was 83 years of age. After the death of Asa Budine fourteen years ago Mrs. Budine went to Gllboa, her former home, to live with a sister, Mrs. Kingsley. After her death about three years ago she went to Cooksburgh and lived with her son, Warren Snyder, until last October when Mr. and Mrs. Budine went to Cooksburgh, she returning home with them and has been tenderly cared for by them until her death. Mrs. Budine or "Grandma," as she was called, has been very active in life and had just finished crocheting two dozen booties when she was stricken with the fatal disease, from which on account of her advanced age, she could not survive. A call was sent to her stepson. Herman Budine, who lives at Loomis, and with his wife came at once and was with her when death came. Mrs. Budine leaves a son and a daughter by her first marriage. Warren Snyder and Mrs. Lillian Becker of Gilboa; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, also five stepsons by her second marriage, of whom three survive, Burton of Pines brook, Herman of Loomis and Leslie of Walton; Nathan died last February, Cyrus died in April and George died two years ago; also a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Burton Budine, who died two years ago, and several step grandchildren, A short prayer was held at the house at 10 o'clock by Rev. Robinson and at Gilboa at 1:30 at the church by Rev. Wickerson with burial in the Gilboa cemetery.
