Notes for: Henry Bodine

I believe this Henry Bodine is listed in the 1850 Census of Loudoun Co., VA (household 1862). Henry is 67 and born in VA. Alithea is 40, VA. Another girl, Harriet Bodine, is 19 and born in VA. No relationship is stated on the transcription.

Henry Bodine is probably the son of James Bodine, but this is not certain. His birth date, for example, is too close to his older sibling Lydia; so either his birth date is wrong, her birth date is wrong, or one of them is not a child of James Bodine. According to Ronny Bodine, any Bodine in Loudoun or Fairfax Counties, Virginia, would have belonged to this family. Henry was bound out at the age of eight in 1791 to learn the trade of tanner from Robert McCall. He served in the War of 1812 and died between 1855 and 1860. Doris Johnston said there is a deed, dated December 2, 1825, between Henery Bodine (1st) and Edward Harmitt (2nd) and Isaac Vandeventer (3rd part) in Loudoun County to secure a bond.

Ronny Bodine, wrote the following:

Henry Bodine is believed to be a son of James Bodine. In Oct 1791, the Loudoun County court "Ordered that the Overseers of the poor bind out Henry Bodine eight years old the first day of this instant to Robert McCalla to learn the trade of a Tanner according to law," (Loudoun Co. Court Order Book O: 50). This establishes a birth date of 1782 or 1783.

In May 1814, at Winchester, Virginia, Henry Bodine enlisted in Captain Michael Coyle's Company, Colonel Taylor's Regiment of Virginia Militia. He appears in the censuses of Loudoun County from 1830 to 1850, but not thereafter. The 1850 census states his age to be 67 (i.e. born c1783) and born in Virginia. On 20 Jan 1851, in Frederick County, Virginia, Henry Bodine, age 70 on the 14th of October last, a resident of Waterford, Loudoun County, filed for a pension. He filed again on 26 May 1855 at Loudoun County, then aged 76 years. His pension request was rejected (Rejected Pension Application File No. 163540-55). He was aged 70 on 14 Oct 1850, thus born 14 Oct 1780.

***End of info from Ronny.

The following information on this Henry Bodine comes from a descendant chart sent to me by Bettina Allred (bjallred at uswest.net). No sources were given on this chart. He supposedly signed a petition to incorporate Waterford Township on December 28, 1835. In 1850, he was a laborer. In 1840, he was the head of household: 2 m 20-30; 1 m 50-60 (self); 1 f 5-10; 3 f 20-30; 1 f 50-60. Henry may have had a daughter named Alithea. And Alithea may have had a daughter, Harriet J. Bodine who married James William Russell.

Her address is Bettina J. Allred, 948 E. Bergeson, Boise, Idaho 83706.

She also posted this at the Ancestry.com message board for Bodines:

Would love to share information on Bodines....Henry Bodine b.1780,d.1856 Waterford, VA. Wifes name might be Jane. They had two girls: Alithea Bodine b.1810 & Mary Jane Bodine b. abt 1814. Harriet J. Bodine m. James William Russell b.1838., they had 7 children: Alice, Ida, Harry, Hallie, Florence, Nina, and my line Rosalie Russell m. Charles C. Shawen. b.1853, they had 8 children, my line being: Nellie Bartigis Shawen b. 1860 m. Chester Larue Smith b.1902. Mary Jane Bodine m. Jacob Lemon b. 1807-1813. They had 4 children: Thomas, Elizabeth, Maria Jane, George Henry.

Bettina said that some Bodines are buried in Waterford in Loudoun County.

This Henry Bodine is most likely the Henry Bodine (BK#16631) who might have been the son of James and Mary Bodine. However, that is only a guess. It's also very uncertain if James was the father of that Henry. Here is another message that has something to do with this family and who Henry's father might have been:

Hi again.

I just received the book "Index to The Tithables of Loudon County, VA and to Slaveholders and Slaves 1758-1786, Compiled and Edited by Margaret Lail Hopkins published in 1991.

The following Bodines are listed:

Cornelius-1779-Cameron Parish
Cornelius-1770, 1771-1772, 1774, 1776-1777-Shelburne Parish
Isaac-1770,1771-1772, 1774, 1778, 1782 1784-Shelburne Parish
Jacob-1770, 1771-1772, 1778-Cameron Parish
Jacob-1773-1774, 1776-1777, 1781-Shelburne Parish

I guess it is possible that one of these Bodines could be Henry's father.
