Notes for: Amos Bodine

I found the on-line reference to Amos' death certificate at the Ohio Historical Society. It is in v. #5886, certificate #7556. He died on January 25, 1929 in Marion, Ohio.

Bernice Bodine sent away for this death certificate. It lists Amos' parents as Abram Bodine and Mary Smith.

Here is a message I got from Nancy White, a researcher in Hardin County, Ohio:

Hi David:

I found the following marriages for Abram and Amos:

Bodine, Abram; Smith, Mary; 6 February 1852; Book 1, Page 283
Bodine, Abram; Brown, Amelia; 21 January 1869; Book 1, Page 98
Bodine, Amos; Kipp, Lydia Ann; 19 Nov 1874; Book 5, Page 161

Looks like Amos, Sallie, and Albert are children of Mary and Lana is a child of Amelia. Not sure about Clark. Thought he might have been a child of Amelia by a previous marriage but couldn't find a marriage record for her under anything close to Rites.

In 1840, there was a Thomas Bodine who was a Trustee in Dudley Township.

Abram is listed in the 1880 Census Index for Pleasant Township but I do not have that Census. So the following is not Abram [sic - The Abram listed in the 1880 Census was not this Abram Bodine; so the information below DOES apply to this Abram. The Abram in the 1880 Census was 25, but this Abraham would have been about 52 - if he were still alive.]

Newspaper Clipping, dated April 24, 1873

Small Pox -- It is reported on good authority that the small pox is now very severe in Dudly Township, especially on the Wheeler settlement, about seven miles from Kenton. Several deaths have been reported, among them Mr. Abraham Bodine and two children. We would advise our people hereabouts to have themselves and children vaccinated.

Newspaper Clipping, dated April 10, 1873

DIED In Dudley Township, on Monday, March 31st, of small pox, Frankie son of Abraham and Jane Bodine, aged four months and twenty-eight days.

Weep not, it was a Father's hand
that plucked your lovely flower;
He saw twas fair and took it hence
to grace his heavenly bower.

The brightest star has left your sky,
Yet be not so cast down
The Saviour wanted it above
to sparkle in his crown.

Your home is dark and cheerless now,
and desolate your hearth;
But know that heaven is brighter made
by what you've lost on earth.

He comforted, for God is good,
and when this life is o'er --
Where death and sorrow is unknown,
Your treasure he'll restore.

Hi Dave, Mike Bodine here again. I went to some graveyards and got some names---my family is from the Hardin County Ohio area. I will list the names below:

Amos Bodine born 1853 died 1928 (buried in Hale Cemetery on Rt 273 outside Mt. Victory Ohio Lydia Bodine (Amos wife) born 1855 died 1921 (buried beside Amos)

Amos is a brother to my great grandfather - Albert Bodine

But the one I am looking for a connection to is: John D. Bodine born 1895 and died 1970
his wife---Grace T. Bodine born 1903 died 1973
possible son beside them - Robert L Bodine born May 14, 1922 and died July 11 1935
they are all 3 buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery on SR31 outside of Mt. Victory, Ohio.

If you have any info or can help; please let me know. I know that you are a very busy man but if you have or know of a way I can learn more how to put the info on the website---I am very interested.

Thanks!

Mike Bodine

P.S. I sent you an email last week---I have since found your website etc. Very interesting stuff---by the way; are we related????

From Ronny Bodine:

In June 1900, Amos Bodine lived in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio. He was a farmer and reported that in 26 years of marriage his wife, Lydia, had borne 2 children, but only their daughter Clara, living with them, was surviving. In Jan 1920, Amos and Lidy Bodine lived in Hale Township, Hardin County. Living with them was John B. Bodine, age 24 and Grace Bodine, age 18, described as their grandson and granddaughter. Amos and Lydia Bodine were buried in Hale Cemetery, Hale County, Ohio. Lydia (Kipp) Bodine was the daughter of David and Mary (LaRue) Kipp.

Obituary, The Marion Daily Star (Marion, Ohio) of 25 Jan 1921.
LaRue, O., Jan. 25--(Special)--Mrs. Amos Bodine, mother of Mrs. J. L. Shaw, of this place, was found dead by her husband on the floor of her home, two miles west of Mt. Victory, Monday morning about 9:30 o'clock. Mrs. Bodine who was about sixty-five years old, had been in good health. Death was caused from heart trouble. The body was found near the telephone. The receiver of the telephone was down and it is thought she was endeavoring to call someone. Aside from the husband and daughter, an adopted son, John Bodine, residing at home, survives. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the home. Burial will be made in Hale cemetery.

There is some confusion as to the place of death for Lydia Bodine. Her Ohio death certificate records the place as Washington, Union County whereas the newspaper obituary states it occurred near Mt. Victory which is in adjoining Hardin County.
