Notes for: Carrie Louise Bodine

The 1860 census shows Clarence and his mother living with his grandparents (David S. and Sarah Reynolds) and their daughter Orpha, in Chatham, Columbia County, New York. By 1870 he and his mother are back in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, living in the First Ward. His mother is a seamstress. In 1880, Clarence's Aunt Orpha (his dad's sister) is living with him and his mother in the First Ward of Battle Creek. He is a clerk in a grocery store.

In 1910, Clarence is back in Battle Creek with his wife and children and his mother-in-law. He is an employee (clerk) in a grocery store. They are living on Calhoun Street in Precinct 1. In 1920, he and his wife live on Calhoun Street with their youngest son and two daughters, Dora and Ruth (who is married). Clarence is a caretaker in lodger rooms.

The following paragraph comes from an article about Grace Bodine, Carrie's niece, in a Battle Creek newspaper on February 1, 1948:

Those were the days of cobblestone pavements and of hitching posts on Main street. McCrea's grocery at Main and Canal (Monroe now) was a rival to C. R. Thompson's, where the gas office now stands. The Bodine family was pleased when Reynolds & Ashley took over McCrea's, as Mrs. Eugene Reynolds was a sister of Grace's father.

The picture below was sent to me by Mary (Reynolds) Zednick of Valier, Montana. She is the great-granddaughter of Clarence Eugene Reynolds and Carrie Louise Bodine. Carrie was the daughter of John Howard Bodine and Christina Van Valkenburg. Carrie was born January 5, 1858 and died on October 5, 1945 in Calhoun County, Michigan. She married Clarence Eugene Reynolds November 21, 1882. Carrie is about 83 years old in this picture. Her four children, their spouses (if any), and Carrie's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are pictured at this family reunion from 1941 in Paris, Mecosta County, Michigan.
