Notes for: Henry (Henrich) Peter Dilts

The dates of probate and proof of this will need checking. I see in one book that the will was proven on January 24, 1770.

Nina Eastman sent me some information on Jacob Dilts's family. This comes from History of Hunterdon County, p. 798. It says this man emigrated from Germany and was one of the first settlers of the Township of Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It does not name Henry, but says he is the great-grandfather of their subject Jacob Dilts.

From http://www.hullhome.com/Dilts.Gen.htm:

There is much controversy among Dilss/Dils/Dilts/Diltz researchers as to the ancestry of Henrich/Henry, 1709/12--1787. While most agree that he is from the Wilhelm Dilss, c. 1630-c. 1700, of Urbach, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany family, there are differences as to which of Johann Wilhelm Dilss' sons Henry descends: ?Dils or Wilhelm Dils, c. 1689-1718-19. Until evidence to the contrary comes to light, I have chosen to outline Henry's ancestry via the latter based on the the information and sources provided by Dilss researcher Bob Dils of Dolores, CO. Bob's g-g-g-grandfather was Wilhelm Henry Dils, a nephew of and executor for my Francis Dils.

Other info I have gathered (Dave Bodine):

Henry lived in Kingwood Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was naturalized on December 8, 1744. There is something about this Henry in West New Jersey Deed Books G-H, pages 80 to 84. It may have something to do with 500 acres of land he bought with Paul Cool from William Burge of Philadelphia in Amwell Township on May 18, 1742.

It looks like he was appointed by Henry Telts as overseer of the "Swamp Road" from 1751-1752 in Amwell Township (Amwell Town Book).

His will was written on June 16, 1784 in Amwell Township. It was probated on February 20, 1788 (will #1414J, Hunterdon Co.). One of the executors of his will was John Bodine.

Richard Dils (rmdils at erienet.net) said, "It appears that Henrich had a second wife, also named Anna, after his first wife died. She seems to have been the mother of the younger children."

Here is a message I received about this Henry Dils:

Hi Dave!
According to the info I have, it appears that Peter is Henry's brother. And it appears they both had daughters that married a JOHN BODINE. Peter had dau Ann, Henry had dau Mary.

Here's what I have on Henry DILS who was MARY's father. He's the Henry DILS of the Will. Most of this info was extracted from the Biography of the Henry Dils Family by Augustus Dilts, Flemington NJ 1905. Children William, MARY and Philip are not listed in that genealogy. This info was extracted by another researcher from several sources and sent to me on a family group sheet.

To Dils/Dilts/Diltz researchers. Help!
Does anyone have confirmation that Anna Maria Kase (Kaes, Case) daughter of Johann Philip Kaes and Elizabeth Jung , b 1709 married a Henry (Henrich) Dils or a Peter Dils. Both Henrich and Peter prob. sons of Wilhelm Dils and Eulala Thomas Dils of Urbach all b in Urbach area of Germany and migrated to Hunterdon Co NJ between 1709 and ca 1750.

According to Henry Z Jones 1992 on more Palatine arrivals, Henry Dils was naturalized 8 Dec 1744. Henry Dils d 11 May 1787, bur in Larison Corners Cem, Hunterdon Co NJ. On 25 Jun 1759 a deed from the children and grandchildren to Johann Philip Kase cites the children of Ann Dilts, the late wife of Henry Dils.i. e Philip Dils and Henry Dils Jr. The will of Henry Dils of Amwell mentions his wife Ann(a) and children Philip (the eldest), Henrich, Wilhelm, Peter, Jacob, Maria who m a Bodine, Anna who m a Cool or Kuhl, Elisabeth who m a Tied or Tid, Catherine unmarried, and Christine who m a Wambach.

Other sources indicate that Ann Maria Kase married a Peter Dils who d young and she married secondly a William Hoffman. William Hoffman is supposed to have named in his will his stepchildren, the children of Peter Dils and Anna Maria Kase Dils.

Further, in Chambers book, early Germans of NJ. p 333 lists an Anna Mary ? m a William Hoffman. His will probated 1764 names stepchildren Peter, Philip, Christian (or Christopher), Catherine Dilts Beyer, and Anna Elisabeth Snyder. Johann Philip and Elisabeth Jung Kase actually had two daughters named Anna, one was Anna Maria, the other Anna Elisabeth (the younger one) Peter Dilts (Jr) is believed to have married an Elizabeth, is this Elizabeth Creager.

Can anyone help me out of my Peter Dils, Henry Dils William Hoffman dilema.

From: "Arline J. Sarver" (arlinesarver at worldnet.att.net)

Dear Bob & List:

I have the name of Anna KAES' husband as Henry Peter DILTS. I do not have verification of this name however. I have seen him referred to as Henry DILTS, also as Peter DILTS, and as Henry Peter DILTS. I have his death date listed as 1787 or 1788. Anna d. before 1754, so since her husband outlived her for about 33 years, I assume that he was her only husband.

According to "Our Ancestry in the Case, Fisher, Kuhl, Roelofson and related families" compiled by Kenn STRYKER-RODDA, Anna KAES m. Henry DILTS, and Anna d. before 1754 leaving sons, Philip & Hendrick. The date of 1754 was when Anna's father Johan Philip KAES wrote his will which provided for his wife Rachel (his 2nd wife Rachel HOUSEL), and the children and grandchildren of former wife Anna Elizabeth: William KAES, Eva Marya the wife of Paul KOUL, Frona Catharina, the wife of Henry WINTER, Elizabeth the wife of Peter ALLER, and in the room of my daughter Ann deed to her two children Philip & Hendrick DILTS - 170 acres of the present farm or plantation, to be conveyed within six weeks of his death, and divided into five equal parts; the remaining part of the plantation including dwelling hous (sic) and barn between the children present and future of present wife Rachell: Hendrick, Peter, Phillip, Catharina, but Rachell to have the use of it until the youngest child is 14, but if she remarry for 5 years only; then the executors are to sell the property and give shares to the children by Rachell when they are 21 or marry; "brother" Peter YOUNG and son-in-law Peter ALLER, and William Poppledorph, baker of NYC, to be executors. It was signed in German script, Johan Pilipus KASE(?). The will was made in NYC 27 Nov 1754 and proved in Amwell 12 Feb 1756.

From this will it would seem to indicate that Anna left only two children when she died, and thus the other children who were named in Henry DILTS' will must have been by a subsequent wife.

I am sorry I can shed no light on William HOFFMAN.

Hope this information helps.
