Lovel Coffman enlisted 15 Aug 1862 in Knoxville, Tenn. in Co. A, 40th Iowa Infantry and was mustered out 2 Aug 1865 at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation.

From Marion County, Iowa Marriage Records:
Lovell F. Coffman AND Mary E. Bodine were married 20 Sept 1866.

In 1880, the Coffman family was living in Pella, Marion County, Iowa where "L. M. Coffman" was engaged as a peddler. The couple had 2 daughters and 4 sons all identified only by their initials. In 1900, the Coffmans lived in Los Angeles, California where Lovel worked as a grocer. The couple reported that Mary had borne 6 children of who 5 were then living. By April 1910, Mary Coffman, age 60, was widowed and living with her son Harry in Los Angeles. She now reported that of her 6 children, 4 were still living. She was living with her son Harry in January 1920, now aged 70 and in April 1930, aged 80.

Mary E. Coffman died 13 Jan 1934 in Los Angeles County.
