Notes for: Joseph ("Joe") Clyde Bodine

I got his wife's name from their tombstone. I am assuming that Joseph C. Bodine is this one.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bodine are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby girl that came to live with them October 16.

In 1910, Jos. C. Bodine lived in West Jersey Township, Stark County, engaged in farming. He reported that in 7 years of marriage his wife had borne 2 children, both then living with them. On 12 Sept 1918, Joseph Clyde Bodine registered for the World War 1 draft in Knox County, Illinois. He reported he was born 13 Dec 1877, worked as a laborer, and his nearest kin was his wife, Margaret Bodine. In 1920, he lived in Galesburg, Knox County with his wife and 2 children and in 1930 in West Jersey Township, Stark County. Margaret (Powell) Bodine was the daughter of Joseph W. and Martha (Colwell) Powell.

Hannibal, Mo., Jan. 31 (AP)--J.C. Bodine, Toulon, Ill., was killed and the victim's wife, B. K. Garrison and H. W. Lloyd were injured in a motor car accident on Highway No. 36 near Clarence today.

Bodine, of Toulon, Illinois, farmer, born 13 Dec 1879 in Elmore, Illinois, son of David Bodine (born Elizabethtown, NJ) and Mary Ann McCoy (born Ohio), died 31 Jan 1934 in Lentner Township, Shelby County of a fractured skull in an auto accident "Driving automobile on icy slippery pavement car turning over on High Way No. 36." Burial West Jersey. Informant was Mrs. Joseph Bodine.

[Lengthy account of the accident is here omitted.] Joseph Clyde Bodine, son of David J. and Mary Ann (McCoy) Bodine, was aged 56 years at the time of his death. His father, David J. Bodine came to Illinois in the '40s with his parents, locating in West Jersey township. For the past several years, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Bodine have resided on a farm southwest of West Jersey. They resided for a few years in Galesburg where their two children attended school. Besides his wife, Mr. Bodine is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Bodine, of Elmwood, who had been making her home with her son and family; also two children, Mrs. Walter McElwain, who, with her husband, resides with her parents; and Dale Bodine, of Detroit. He also leaves one granddaughter, the small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bodine.

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Bodine, 60, were held at 2.30 Monday afternoon at the West Jersey church in charge of Rev. Thomas E. Spencer, of Preemption, formerly of West Jersey. He was assisted by Rev. Eugene Anderson, of the Galva Baptist church. Mrs. Bodine passed away Friday at Kewanee Public hospital whe she had submitted to a major operation several days previously and her condition was serious. For some time past she had made her home in Galva with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter McElwain. Burial services were held in the McElwain home here earlier in the afternoon. Interment was in West Jersey cemetery. Margaret Olive Powell, daughter of Joseph N. and Martha Colwell Powell, was born June 3, 1883, at Tonica, and passed away October 1, 1943, at Kewanee Public hospital at the age of 60 years, three months and 28 days. She had submitted to a major operation several days previous to her death. She was married at Peoria December 31, 1902, to Joseph C. Bodine, of West Jersey, and to this union were born two children: Mildred, Mrs. Walter McElwain, of Galva, and Dale, of Sydney, Ohio; also two grandchildren, the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bodine.
