Hi again

I received a note from a different Martin/Bodine researcher (still trying to get in touch with the other one) I told her what you had on the family and she had the following to offer:

"History of Hocking County, Ohio" page 361 An article written about Loring Glacer >Matheny speaks of his wife Hannah Martin daughter of William and Mary Ann (Bodine) Martin of Athens Twp. Also My Matilda Manda Martin's (Born 1838 NJ. Died 1920 Athens County, OH.) death certificate states that William is her father and her Obit states her sibs. Hannah Matheny being one of them.

I would like to see what he has. I found that a William Martin was a full blooded Cherokee Indian who married a white woman, However He is not ours. He was born the same year as our William 1812.(not that that matters :) Bird is a Cherokee name! I do know that Mary Anne Bodine was married to William Martin in 1838 living in NJ.

She is going to send me the source info, unfortunately she had to fly out of town last night for a funeral, she will be back in touch next week.

I will keep looking and let you know what I find.

Hi,
I was reviewing some census records that my husbands sister sent me and found the following,

1860 Athens, Ohio

William Martin Age: 49 Born: New Jersey
Margaret A. (Mary?) Age: 50 Born: New Jersey
Ellen Age: 18 Born: New Jersey
Henry Age 14 Born: New Jersey
Cheroetta? Age: 12 Born: New Jersey
Hannah Age: 10 Born: New Jersey
Arrabella Age 7 Born: Ohio

Mary A. Age: 59 Born: New Jersey
Orra B. Age 17 Born: Ohio
Owen Age: 13 Born: Ohio
Henry Martin Age: 25 Born: New Jersey (Son of William and Mary Ann?)
Isabel Age: 20 Born: Ohio

Also, I have the 1880 Athens Ohio Census with:

Henry Martin Age: 35 Born: New Jersey (could be William and Mary Ann's son)
Isadora Age: 30 Born: Ohio
Willis (Willie) Age: 9 Born Ohio
Nellie Age: 6 Born: Ohio
Katie Age: 3 Born: Ohio
Addie Age: 1 Born: Ohio

She also had a record from Hunterdon County, New Jersey, 1850.

1850 Hunterdon Co. New Jersey

William Martin Age: 40
Mary Ann Age: 40
Peter Age: 19
Jane? Age: 17
Margaret Age: 15
Matilda Age: 13
Elianor? Age: 10

Henry? Age: 5
Charotta Age 2

The adults William and Mary Ann are to old be the parents of the younger children so I'm not sure on the relationships in this family.

More data and hopefully more clues to these families. I will keep you posted as I find more.

I looked at those census transcripts, it does say 40, (my eyes are not the best these days, sigh) The 1850 census was for Alexandria Twp, (which in 1830 only had a pop. of 3042 so you're right it has to be them.

I don't have the actual obit (yet) Nannette will send it when she returns from the funeral, but I did find this in a letter she sent:

William Martin And Mary Anne Bodine are the parents to Matilda Manda Martin b. 1838 d. 1920 Athens County, Ohio. She married John H Bricker b. 1828 PA d. 1904 Athens Co. Ohio. (these are Nannette's great great grandparents.

As Matilda's sibs I have

1. William m. Isadore Harper
2. Hanna Arbell Martin m. Loring Glaser Matheny
3. Henry Martin m. Mary Isabel Wadley
4. Orra B Martin
5. Owen Martin m. Emma Larison
6. Cherretta Martin m. Ezra Cornell.

Okay, I spent some time this afternoon with the records again. I received the name William Henry Martin from the Bodine researcher (the one I can't seem to locate) who told me about him being the brother of my Owen Martin, he's also the one who provided me with Mary Ann's surname and parents.

So at this William and Henry could be the same or not. Henry shows up on the 1870 census with Isabel Martin age 20 no kids, then in the 1880 there is Henry Martin, Isadore Martin age 30, plus Willis (Willie) Nellie, Katie and Addie.

Maybe the Henry Martin married to Mary Waldley is someone else, but then Nannette said she had Henry Martin married to Mary Isabel Wadley as one of Matilda's siblings, along with just plain William Martin married to Isadore
Harper. So I will have to wait til she returns to sort out that one.

Next, I have a page of Marriage records for Athens Co. Ohio 1865-1880, this came from my sister in law. It's from a book she found in the Huntsville Public Library H977.197 MAR

She copied all the Martin's

Here are a couple high points

Name Name Date Vol. Page

Martin, Arabell Matheny, Albert A Jun 10, 1874 6-30
I have a copy of Arabell and Alberts marriage affidavit

Martin, Chenetha Cornell, Ezra Jan 20, 1870 5-211

Martin Hannah Matheny, Loring G. Nov 17, 1869 5-202

Martin, Henry Wadley, Mary Feb 05, 1876 6-169

Martin, Jane Matheny, John Aug 8, 1874 6-44
I have a copy of Jane and Johns marriage affidavit, could she also be a daughter of William and Mary Ann (there was a Jane in the 1850 NJ census)

Martin, Margaret Sedwick, Ephraim Nov 24, 1866 5-51
William and Mary Ann also had a Margaret

***Martin, Owen Larison, Emma Dec 24, 1878 6-408
I have a copy of Owen and Emma marriage affidavit, this is my husbands line

Martin, William H. Harper, Isadore Jan 22, 1868 5-132

Peter didn't disappear, I didn't send you this info: 1870 Athens Ohio Census

Martin, Peter age 39 Born NJ
Martin, Rhonda age 27 Born NJ
Martin, Isabell age 17 Born Ohio
Martin, Curtis age 1 Born Ohio

1880 Athens Ohio Census

Martin, Peter age 49 Born NJ
Martin, (couldn't read) I'm sure it was Rhonda age 37 Born NJ, Relationship wife
Martin, ?? (really couldn't read) age 12 or 18 Born Illinois Relationship son
Martin, Curtis, age 11 Born Ohio, Relationship son

Peter isn't in the Ohio marriage records because it appears he married before reaching there.

The 1850 census is an actual copy of the census film and kinda hard to read so I put in ? when I wasn't sure. The other census records were transcribed by my sister in law.

Looking back at her records, in 1860 Athens she has a Arrabella age 7 then in 1870 a Orra B (probably ArraB) age 17 so that is probably the same girl.

Also on the 1870 is:
Bricker, John H age 42
Bricker, Matilda (nee Martin) age 31
plus their 4 children and his mother
This is Nannette's 3rd great grandparents

Hi Dave,

1st I want to say awesome website!, you've really done a great job putting together the Bodines. I'm trying to do the same thing with our “Baker” lines. Isn't DNA wonderful for genealogists?

We have a Mary Ann Bodine born about 1811 probably in Hunterdon County, NJ. She married before 1831 William Martin. (I've check marriages for New Jersey and have had no luck in locating theirs)

They had 8 children in NJ before leaving for Athens County Ohio, in about 1851 (they are in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon, NJ for the 1850 census).

I initially thought that Mary Ann Bodine belonged to Peter Bodine and Elizabeth Harris, but see now that I was on the wrong track.

I'm very interested in your 10 most wanted pages especially numbers 4, 8 and 9.

Mary Ann (called Margaret in the 1860 census and Mary or Mary A the remainder) died in Athens County, Ohio after 1880. Her husband William Martin died 13 Mar 1881.

I have a picture of their headstone which says Mary Bodine wife of Wm Martin, I can send it to you if you would like?

She was mother to 10 children
1. Peter Fisher Martin b. 28 Sept 1831 Bloomsbury, Hunterdon, NJ (from obit) married 12 Mar 1851 Flemington, Hunterdon, NJ to Mary Ann Hoppock (have that marriage record)
2. Jan Martin b. 1833 NJ
3. Margaret A. Martin b. 1835 NJ
4. Matilda Mann Martin b. 3 Mar 1838 Hunterdon, NJ (from her obit)
5. Eleanor Ellen Martin b 1842 NJ
6. Hannah M. Martin b. 12 Aug 1844 near Easton, Londonery County, NJ (from Obit)
7. Henry Martin b. 18 Aug 1845
8. Cheretta Martin b 1848
9. Arrabella Martin b. Jul 1852
10. Owen McCellan Martin b. 16 Dec 1856

Our Mary Ann Bodine could be related to the Bodines you have in Hunterdon County. As an interesting side note in the wagon train that went to Ohio there were Wyckoff family members. Joseph Wyckoff and his wife Mary Mellick, their great-grandson Hadley C. Hawk married Mabel Claire Martin the granddaughter of Mary Ann Bodine.

There was intermarriage between others on the wagon train, Mary Jane Kitchen daughter of Isaac Kitchen and Sarah Ann Wyckoff married William J. Hawk son of David Hawk and Susan Quick.

Hope you find this helpful, again great job on your website, I've placed a link under Bodine on my site directing people to your page for more information.
