Notes for: William Stitt Bodine

He may have been baptized on January 9, 1807 at Montgomery DRC or this date could be wrong altogether. "New England Families" gives his birth date as May 10, 1807. There is a William Bodine who married a Susan Milspaugh on October 19, 1842 at the DRC in Montgomery, New York. It could be this William. He is listed as being from Crawford and she is from Montgomery.

More likely is that this is William Stitt Bodine who married Permilla Sears in 1832 at Pine Bush, Orange County, New York. Permilla was born on February 23, 1813 in Pine Bush. They had children: Hannah Bodine, born May 1835 in Pine Bush; Augusta Caroline Bodine, born September 8, 1838 at Pine Bush; and Permilla Bodine, born March 23, 1841 at Pine Bush. All this info comes from the www.FamilySearch.com site.

I think it is more likely that he is William Stitt Bodine because this William's brother, Francis Millard Bodine, also had children born in Pine Bush at about the same time as the children mentioned above. This is just a guess, though.

I later received a message from Ralph Weller confirming that this William was William Stitt Bodine.

He does not seem to be in his father's will of 1849, but is in his mother's will of 1862.

Permilla's stone in the Old Montgomery Brick Cemetery says, "Pamelia C. Sears, wife of William B. Bodine, d. April 27, 1841 A.28-0-12." The Montgomery Reformed Church records as copied by Hasbrouch says under deaths: 1841- April 28 Permilla Tears, wife of William Bodine.

The Millspaugh book says she was born on April 23, 1813 and that she was the daughter of William Sears and Hannah Conger.

On May 29, 1834, the DRC in New Prospect received Benjamin Bodine and wife Susan, Miss Permilla Bodine (prob. Mrs.), Amanda Bodine and Hannah Bodine all by certificate.

In Sawyer's copying of DRC New Prospect, page 3 gives under baptisms 1833 - Mary S. Weller (no date b. or bpt.) - Mrs. Permilla Bodine (an adult bpt. ? or sponsor ?). She is probably not the Pamelia Jane baptized at the Reformed Church in Montgomery about 1818 and who was born on June 16, 1813, the daughter of Mathew Sears and Margaret Finch.

In 1850, per the census, William is living with his wife and three daughters and two sons in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan. The value of the real estate owned is $4,000.

In 1870 the family is in Battle Creek and William is a retired farmer. Susan is keeping house. Augusta is at home, along with Pamilla and Esther. Egbert is a life insurance agent. Jacob is a clerk in a dry goods store and Libbie is at home. The value of William's real estate is $7,000 and personal property is valued at $1,000.
