Notes for: Abraham (Abram) Lawshe Bodine

The following comes from the Tioga County, Pennsylvania web site maintained by Joyce Tice. The source for this was "History of Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Biographical Appendix , Morris Township" (W.W. Munsell & Co., New York : 1883), pp. 25-27.

ABRAM L. BODINE was born in Wellsboro, in 1832. He married in 1855 Miss Julia H. Tillotson, of Otsego county, N.Y. After the ups and downs of business life he is now postmaster at Morris, and proprietor of the Morris Hotel, which he built in 1878. His parents were Ellis M. and Margaret Bodine.

Some of the information on him and his parents and his children came from the LDS web site at www.FamilySearch.com. They are all described as being from Hoytsville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. I had a birthday of October 15, 1834 for him, but that is not what the tombstone says. His name is given as "Larosha" on the 1850 Census of Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He is also listed as an "apprentice."

In the 1880 Census of Morris, Tioga Co., PA, Abraham is listed as a farmer. In 1860, in the Delmar Census, he was listed as a tanner.

Here is some more taken from "The History of Tioga County, Pa., Volume #2", found in the Green Free Library, Wellsboro, Pa.; dated 1897. My appreciation to Catherine (Bodine) Shumway and Janet (Murtland) Bodine for this information.

I wonder if the following doesn't apply to this Abraham Bodine. It comes from the BRADFORD REPORTER - Towanda, Pa., June 19, 1884 (SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP):

A. L. Bonine is an industrious, enterprising farmer, well up with the times. In addition to his farming he carries a small dairy, making the raising of sheep a specialty, keeping the Southdowns. He also gives attention to the raising of fine blooded hogs. Mr. Bodine is known as "the peach king" of the county. He has four very fine young orchards, which include about 6,000 trees. He thinks this industry can be made a success in our latitude, and is the first one to make the adventure on a large scale in the county.
