Notes for: Joseph Bodine

I originally had his name as John Bodine, but the data I've seen lately seems to say his name was Joseph. I also had his middle name as "Painter," but I have serious doubts that would be correct. This family was living in Stark County, Illinois at the time of the 1850 Census (Census, p. 33).

Joseph and Rebecca M. Bodine are in the 1880 Census of Millbrook, Peoria Co., IL. He is a retired farmer, age 68, NJ, NJ, NJ. She is 65, NJ, NJ, NJ.

Hi Dave,
My name is Stacy Bodine. I'm looking for the Bodines who were in Illinois in the 1800's. My husband's g.g.g.grandparents were Joseph Bodine b. 11Jan1812 d. 8 APR 1897 m. Rebecca M. Painter b. 2 SEPT 1814 d. 2 JAN 1912. They are both buried in the Elmore Cemetery in Elmore, IL. But I don't have either of their parents names. Thank you.

Hello again. Frederick Bodine from Illinois here. I trekked to Elmore and walked the Cemetary and got a picture of the Bodine Headstone there. The only one. It's not easy to read but I checked it out and the info is correct for Joseph and Rebecca Bodine. Plus I talked to my brother Tony about his and Terry Ann's mother's name which is Vivian Jean Young born in 1939 (he thinks).

Here below is the picture Mike sent:

From Ronny Bodine (Nov 9, 2018):

In 1850, Joseph Bodine lived with his wife and 3 sons in Stark County, Illinois, in 1860 in Rochester, Peoria County, Illinois, 1870 in Millbrook, Peoria County as a retired hotel keeper and 1880 in Millbrook as a retired farmer. In 1900, Rebecca Bodine, aged 85 and widowed, lived with her son David and his family in Elmwood, Peoria County. It was noted she had borne 4 children of whom 2 were then living. In April 1910, Rebecca Bodine, age 95, lived with her son John and his family in West Jersey Township, Peoria County. Joseph and Rebecca Bodine were buried in Glendale Cemetery, Peoria County.

From: "The History of Stark County, Illinois," 1887, p. 686, taken from the biography of their son John P. Bodine:
In 1846 his parents came to this township, where they purchased a farm, and where they remained until 1858, when they removed to Rochester, Peoria county, where the father engaged in his trade of carriage-building. After some years he retired from active life and is now enjoying the fruits of their successful labors, he in his seventy-fourth year and she in her seventy-second year. Mrs. Bodine, Sr., is a respected member of the Presbyterian church.

Newspaper Obituary, The Wyoming Post-Herald (Wyoming, Ill.) of Thursday, 15 April 1897.

I also had this from Ronny before:

Obituary, The Stark County News (Toulon, IL) of 10 Jan 1912.
Another pioneer has answered the last roll call from the mystic river. Rebecca M. Bodine was born in Warren county, New Jersey, September 2, 1814, and died at the home of her son, J. P. Bodine, January 2, 1912, aged 97 years and 4 months. She was a daughter of John and Harriet Painter, and survived by many years by her two sisters. December 31, 1835, she was married to Joseph Bodine, who departed this life April 9, 1897. To them four children were born--a daughter, who died in childhood; and three sons, Enoch K., who was a musician in Wattertown's Battery, First Illinois Artillery, and was killed at the siege of Vicksburg June 15, 1863; John P., where she made her home the greater part of the time since the death of her husband, a farmer in West Jersey township; and David J., who lives in Elmwood. Three grandchildren and four great grandchildren survive. In 1846, Mr. and Mrs. Bodine started toward the setting sun and landed at Peoria after three weeks of weary travel. From there they came to Stark county, where they settled on a tract of land one mile east of West Jersey. In 1858 the family moved to Rochester, Peoria county, where they resided until the death of the father. Mrs. Bodine was one of the first members that organized the Presbyterian church at West Jersey, and has always affiliated with the Presbyterian or Congregational churches. While living at West Jersey there was a family stricken with Cholera. It took the whole family with the exception of one little girl and this little girl Mrs. Bodine took and cared for a number of years. The funeral services were held at the Elmore M. E. church, conducted by Rev. E. L. Fahnestock, assisted by the M.E. choir of West Jersey. The interment was in the Elmore cemetery.
