Notes for: Edward Bodine

This is the Edward Bodine buried in the Staten Island Cemetery, lot 155/157 (W. Van Name/J. Bush Plot). He married to a Phoebe Bush. He died 5/18/1875 at 75 years of age. Phoebe died July 15, 1846 at 50 years of age. Information at FamilySearch.com says an Edward and Phoebe Bodine were married about 1818 at St. Andrews Church in Richmond County, New York.

I had two Edward Bodine's in my data, both born on Staten Island at about the year 1800. Circumstancial evidence seems to show that they are the same person. There are records in "Staten Island Church Records" by Tobias Wright showing that an Edward Bodine was baptized on July 12, 1797 to parents James Bodine and Elizabeth Bodine (sponsors were Edward and Abraham Egbert). There does not seem to be any birth date given. There is another record stating that this same Edward (son of James Bodine) was a widower when he married Martha Ann Bedell on November 4, 1846. Then we have the Edward Bodine buried in the Old Staten Island Cemetery in 1875 at 75 years of age. His wife, Phoebe, is buried near him. She died July 14, 1846. So Phoebe died right before he married Martha Bedell. This seems like enough circumstancial evidence to believe that the Edward Bodine buried in the Old Staten Island Cemetery is the son of James and Elizabeth Bodine. However, one should realize that it is still an assumption.

On 25 March 1855 Edward Bodine, aged 55, a resident of Northfield, New York, applied for a bounty land warrant based upon his military service during the War of 1812. He stated he was called out at Castleton, Richmond County, in Sept 1814 and served as a Private in the company commanded by Captain Barnes, in the Regiment of New York Militia commanded by Colonel Connor. His claim was rejected (Blwt Rejected 63214).
