Notes for: Garrett ("Garrie") Sylvester Bodine

I did have his name as Ganett, but that seems to have been a mistake. RB has it has Garret S. Bodine.

From Ronny Bodine (May 15, 2020):

The 1900 census reported Garrett and Hattie Bodine had been married 18 years, thus married about 1882, Yet, the marriage records of Traverse County, Michigan record that James Kennedy, 24, AND Hattie Knaggs, 16, both of Walton, MI, were married 20 Jan 1878 at Fife Lake and that Herbert Huntington, 25, of Grand Traverse, MI, born in Kalamazoo, MI, son of Wm. & Martha (Munsell) Huntington AND Hattie M. Kennedy, 23, of Traverse City, MI, born in Monroe City, dau. of Robert & Hattie (Bunson) Skaggs, were married 21 Jan 1888 in Silver Corners, by Geo. Simpson, JP.

The answer to this mystery is explained in "The Knaggs Family of Ohio and Michigan," Robert B. Ross, ed., Detroit: 1902, p. 44-45. Mary was the daughter of Robert W. Knaggs (1822-1891) and his 3rd wife, Harriet R. Cone (d. 1902).
"Mattie Mary Knaggs, born at Monroe city, July 13, 1861; married twice. Her first husband was James Kennedy, to whom she was married on Jan. 20, 1878. Three children: The first was a son, and the second a daughter, who both died in infancy. The third, Myrtle May Kennedy, was born March 29, 1885, at Walton, Mich. Divorced from her first husband in 1871. Hattie Mary Knaggs married Garrie Bodine, of St. Louis, MO., on Feb. 22, 1891; no children. She now lives at Shreveport, La., where she carried on the business of dressmaking. Her husband is a contractor and builder."

Obviously the editor was unaware of her second married in 1888. Claiming he (Garrett) and Hattie were married 18 years appears to have been a wish to include his stepdaughter, Mary, as his natural child, and not having to explain her age versus the actual number of years he and Hattie were married. Or, perhaps he had also adopted Mary, as he did his two younger daughters. There is no record of the marriage in St. Louis.
