Obituary, Penn Yan (NY) Democrat of 15 Oct 1909.
Delmar J. Knapp, Sheriff of Yates County, died at the Beahan hospital, in Canandaigua, Friday night, October 8, 1909. This announcement last Saturday morning was a surprise and a shock to this community. He was taken to the hospital October 2d and underwent an operation for appendicitis, and people here believed the crisis had passed and that he was recovering. A change for the worse took place last Thursday, and the Sheriff's family was summoned. He died about 9 o'clock Friday night. Sheriff Knapp was a resident of the town of Barrington, and a farmer by occupation. He was an active Republican, and was supervisor of his town during the years 1903-4. Three years ago this fall he was elected sheriff of Yates county, and was about completing his term of office. While not of robust health, he was energetic and active, and was engaged in several business enterprises. Mr. Knapp was a member of the Dundee Baptist church. He was one of the leaders in church work, and one whose counsel was sought and valued by the pastor. He was also a member of Dundee Lodge, I. O. O. F. Besides his widow, he is survived by one daughter, Augusta, and one brother, Clarence H. Knapp, of Penn Yan. At the funeral, which was held Monday afternoon at the jail residence, Rev. Delos E. Sprague, pastor of the Dundee Baptist church, officiated. Keuka Lodge, I. O. O. F., members of the Penn Yan Club, county officers, and citizens generally attended the services. The remains were taken to Dundee for burial.
