Notes for: Charles Bodine

The following biography comes from chapter L of "BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: BORORGH OF HUGHSVILLE, AND WOLF (INCLUDING PICTURE ROCKS), SHREWSBURY, AND PENN TOWNSHIPS" in Lycoming County, PA.

CORNELIUS BODINE was descended from Huguenots who settled in New Jersey and New York. He was born in 1757, and settled in the vicinity of Hughesville. He married Margaret Sutphen, and with her migrated to Lycoming county in 1802. They subsequently settled in Seneca county, New York, where Mr. Bodine died on June 12, 1820, and Mrs. Bodine, on November 15, 1824. Their children were Charles, Isaac, Peter, John, Gilbert, George, Abraham, and Cornelius. Abraham was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, and was twice married; his first wife was Mercy Paxon, and to this union were born five children: John; Charles; George; Margaret, and Elizabeth; his second wife was Barbara Cruze, by whom he had one son, Russell. Charles Bodine, son of Abraham Bodine, was a merchant and one of the most prominent and enterprising men of Hughesville during his life. He married Maria Christman, and to them were born five children: Clinton, deceased; C. Christman, deceased; De Witt; Milton, and Mary, who is deceased. Charles Bodine died in 1850, and his wife, February 26,1880.

There is a Charles Bodine who married a Maria Chrissman on January 31, 1833 in Bloomsburg, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He is said to be of Hughesville and she is from Columbia County (PA). They were married by a Rev. Hutchins. This comes from the "Lycoming Chronicle" published in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1833. The picture of his wife, Maria, comes from a Christman album and was identified by a handwritten note of the back.

An article about DeWitt says that DeWit was one of six sons of Charles and Maria (Christman) Bodine. If that is true, I am missing two sons (and maybe some daughters).

Here is an abstract from the Muncy Luminary of April 23, 1851:

Charles BODINE, died in Hughesville on Saturday evening last, of apoplexy, a merchant, aged 41 years, 9 months and 15 days. He leaves a widow and four children. The circumstances of his death were mournful indeed. He died suddenly and alone. To the shock of his family, he was found in his yard, lifeless.

From Ronny Bodine:

From Genealogical and Personal History of Lycoming County, John W. Jordan, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1906, as that portion in the biography of DeWitt Bodine which pertains to his parents:
Charles Bodine, third child of Abraham and Mercy (Paxon) Bodine, was born July 4, 1809. He was a merchant, and one of the prominent business men of his day. He married Maria Christman, and their children were: C. Christman, Clinton, DeWitt, Milton and Mary, all deceased except DeWitt. Charles Bodine died April 19, 1851, and his widow thirty years later, on February 26, 1880.

From Lycoming Chronicle (Williamsport, Pa.) of 13 Feb 1833:
Charles Bodine, of Hughesville married Maria Chrissman of Columbia County on January 31, 1833 in Bloomsburg, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. They were married by a Rev. Hutchins.
