From The Philadelphia (Penn.) Inquirer of 15 July 1897.
A private telegram received by Stetson & Winsmore, agents here, states that the three-master schooner Edward W. Schmidt, owned by Captain John W. Cramer, of this city, was driven on Popham Beach, Maine, yesterday morning and wrecked, and Captain Cramer drowned. The Schmidt was bound from Saco to Richmond, Maine, to load ice for Philadelphia. The Edward W. Schmidt was a centre-board schooner, of 407 toms, built at Bath, Maine, in 1881 and launched as the Clara S. She was bought in 1895 by Captain Cramer, and after a thorough overhauling her name was changed to Edward W. Schmidt. The vessel sailed from this port June 30 for Saco.
