Notes for: William Bodine

Both William Bodine, and his widow after her remarriage, kept the hotel at Green Tree in Burlington County, New Jersey.

There is a Joel Bodine buried in the same cemetery with William and his wife. Joel died December 11, 1831 at age 55, 8, 8. I'm not sure who this Joel is. This must be wrong since it seems to refer to his son, Joel. Joel would have been about 33, 8, 8 when he died; so the reading must have confused the 55 with a 33. I did have a birth date of April 6, 1798 for Joel, but the dates above would make it morel like April 3, 1798. I'll go with that for now since I don't know where the April 6 date came from.

From Ronny Bodine (August 19, 2020):

William Bodine was buried in Blue Anchor (aka Shreve's) Graveyard, Blue Anchor, Winslow Township, Gloucester County, now Camden County, New Jersey. In a note written by W. H. Bodine on 7 Sept 1899 to Mary Elizabeth Sinnott, compiler of "Annals..." he wrote "I was passing an old grave yard to-day called the "Blue Anchor grave yard," and went in the yard and copied from three of the headstones the following- William Bodine died July 17, 1808 aged 36 years...." In other correspondence to Sinnott, writer Eli C. Hunter, about 1900, writes that William Bodine's gravestone shows he died 17 July 1808 aged 36 years, 4 months and 7 days, which establishes his birth date at 10 March 1772. Hunter also states the grave marker of Mary, wife of William Bodine reads she died 29 Aug 1853 aged 77 years, 10 months and 5 days, which places her birth as 24 Oct 1775,

William and Mary Bodine operated a hotel at Green Tree, in Burlington County, which Mary kept following her remarriage. William Bodine appears on Burlington County tax lists in Evesham Township from 1797 (not 1796 or before) to 1807 and Mary Bodine appears 1808 and 1809.

The will of William Bodine, of Evesham Township, dated 7 July 1808 was proved 8 Aug 1808 and therein named his wife Mary, son Joel to be apprenticed to a merchant when he is 21, and daughter Mary. His wife, Mary, was appointed administratrix (NJ Wills, File 12347C). Mary Bodine married 2ndly, Thomas Hammitt, 26 March 1810 in Burlington County, with whom she was living in 1850 in Medford Township.

The will of Mary Hammitt, of Evesham Township, Burlington County, dated 7 Oct 1852 was proved 22 April 1854 and therein dictated that an 11 acre tract of land be sold and the proceeds be divided with 1/2 to her daughter Sarah, wife of Samuel Slim and the other 1/2 to be divided between the heirs of her son Joel Bodine, deceased, they being her grandson William Bodine, the child of her granddaughter Mary Johnson, deceased, and equal shares to the two children of her granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Lippincott, deceased. She also names her son William Hammett and appoints her son-in-law Samuel Slim as executor (NJ Wills, File 15858C). Mary Bodine Hammitt was also buried in Blue Anchor Graveyard.
