Notes for: Gabriel Burdine / Bodine

LDS says he is a relative of George H. Bodine and William T. Bodine. LDS gave his name as Gilbert, but the name in the baptism records at the New Amsterdam/NY Dutch Reformed Church was Gabriel Bodyn. The witnesses were "Cornelius Brouwer, Anna Sprong, de moeder."

There does appear to be a Gabriel Bodine in the 1790 Census of Wake Co., NC - if that is where this Gabriel ended up. There are two males over 16, one under 16 and five females.

From Ronny Bodine:

Gabriel Bodine was baptized 20 Oct 1756 at the Dutch Reformed Church of New York City with his uncle Cornelius Brewer as a sponsor. As a child he accompanied his parents to North Carolina and in March 1784 he appeared in the Wake County county court to acknowledge a deed (Wake Co. Minutes, 1: 302). A variety of other legal transactions are noted in the court records over the ensuing years, the last being the sale of land on 27 July 1798 (Wake Co. Deeds, Q: 392). By 1800 he had relocated to Iredell County's Salisbury District where the census shows a household that includes besides himself and his wife, one male aged 16-26, one female aged 10-16 and one aged 16-26. In Nov 1803, the court ordered that Gabriel Bordine take William Deavenport, a cripple, to maintain and clothe him for 5 years. (Iredell Co. Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, 1800-1814, p. 555). On 27 March 1804, John McClelland sold 1/2 acre to Gabriel Bodine for $110.53. (Iredell Co. Deeds, F: 57, reg. 12 Feb 1806). The censuses of 1810 and 1820 show in both instances only a male and female aged over 45. The 1815 tax list of Capt. Thompson's Co., Iredell County, lists Gabriel Bordine in possession of 50 acres on the South Yadkin valued at $50.

The will of Gabriel Burdine of Iredell County. There was no record of a probate. (Iredell Co. Will Book 2: 53).
