Notes for: Lewis Pierce Bodine

The names of their children should be taken with a grain of salt. I think there are mistakes in this. The only children listed for Lewis and Lou Bodine in the 1880 Census of Osage, Camden Co., MO are Rosa (12), John (11), James (9), Mary (7), Lou (5), and Fannie (2). I will go with this for all the pre-1880 children. I did have a Molly Bodine as one of their children, but I've deleted her until better proof comes along. I also had a Hannah Bodine listed after Sarah Ella Bodine, but with no dates. I will also delete her until better proof comes along.

Carol Coggins said that the list of siblings she has for James Andrew, Lewis' son, is Ella, Electra, Elzara, Fanny, Mary, John Newton (b. 1869), Rosa Jane, and Julia.

Carol would like to know if anyone has a copy of a photograph of Lewis Pierce Bodine. She has heard that there is one of him with his donkey. Please let me know if someone knows of something.

Carol said that Lurena was known throughout her life by several different nicknames: "Lou," "Renee," and "Lois Renee." At times she was also known as Lurena, pronounced Loo ray' na.

Mary Watson sent this: "Louis P. and Lurena Bodine moved to Dewey County, Texas in 1892. They built a house just a few hundred yards from where the Trail Creek Bridge is now located from the native stone found on the place. They raised corn on the creek bottom land and made their living raising hogs. Many hardships were encountered such as flooding of the creek, losing crops, animals and water entering the house to the point of having to build another house up on the hill away from the creek. A large elm still stands near the home site. They sold the farm in the early 1920's and moved to Taloga where they lived until their deaths."

According to the 1900 Census of Taloga, Oklahoma (or Wise County, Texas), he was born in Missouri. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Illinois. His wife was born in Tennessee. Her father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Illinois. This is the same in the 1880 Census of Camden Co., MO except that her mother was born in Tennessee.

I read your post about Bodines.

My gggrandfather was Lewis Pierce Bodine, half-brother of John Logan Bodine. Lewis P. Bodine married Lurena Colvin, 1865, Miller Co., Mo. -- I can fill in the blanks on descendants of Lewis P. and Lurena Bodine.

Oldest daughter is Rosa Jane Bodine, my ggrandmother, m. Henry Franklin Watson, 1883 in Wise Co., Texas -- their oldest son was Louis Richard Watson, my grandfather, killed in Yuma, Colorado, 1916. It's been very difficult for us to trace our ancestry given he was killed when my father was 2 years old. All we had was my grandmother's Bible information to go on. My father is the last surviving sibling of five, and had a stroke some years ago and couldn't fill us in on family history.

It was your post that enabled my sister to contact Jim Bodine, and subsequently Ronnie Bodine in Georgia that all the dominoes fell in place for us on our Bodine line -- I wanted to thank you. You have no idea how much you helped us. It was a vital link in our research on Bodine line.

From the information I've gathered, including more siblings and a second wife for Andrew Bodine, I think I can trace it back to Jean Bodine, and France, yes -- I'm still organizing it all -- I found the marriage records on my gggf Lewis Pierce Bodine, and two of his brothers, John Logan Bodine and James Bodine, in the same book -- a book of early Missouri marriages in 1860's.... I've requested copies of the originals from Vital Records there, but as yet haven't received a response -- it's still too soon -- what I'm hoping is that there is personal information on it, especially since Lewis was 16 when he married, and I'd think would have required parental permission -- Lurena Colvin was 18 at the time. I've also traced them through northern Texas into Oklahoma where they both died and are buried. I have been able to confirm their children through census material -- and add some spouse's names of the children from that also. So I have a compilation of census copies, Jim Bodine's information he sent, information from Ronny Bodine in Georgia -- and your post -- it's like a big puzzle. The reason no one knows of our Lewis Bodine is the following --

He and Lurena moved to Texas -- either Montague or Wise County -- their oldest daugher was Rosa Jane Bodine, who married Henry F. Watson, both born in Missouri (his father was from Ky, mother from Mo.) -- They married in Wise Co., Tex. 12/15/1883. They had three children there. The state records from that time period were destroyed by fire. Then they homesteaded in Okla in 1889, around the time of the Okla. land run. Their oldest son was Louis Richard Watson, my grandfather -- who was killed in 1916 when my father was a toddler (this happened in Yuma, Colorado). He and my grandmother had five children, the youngest was 4 months old. My grandmother moved back to Okla., bought a farm and raised the children alone. She and Rosa didn't get along very well, so my father and his siblings had minimal contact with their grandparents .... Henry died in 1929; Rosa in 1949. Now my father is the only surviving sibling in his family -- all the family records have fallen to my sister and I -- my father had a stroke some years ago and can't tell us anything. It was after my sister and I started going through all the family records and found my grandmother's papers and old photographs of her and Louis Watson, their "courtship" papers, telegrams, letters, documentation, heirlooms, that inspired us to trace that side of our family. My mother's family tree is pretty complete and extensive -- but we knew nothing of my father's.... we're still working it out. When I have something cohesive, I assure you, I'll send it to you and to Jim Bodine, because without you it would never have happened.

No, that John Bodine isn't -- John Logan Bodine, James and Lewis P. were brothers, all born 1840-49. I'm going back and checking so I can send you the line -- I might be wrong, but I think their father, Andrew, was a brother to the John you're speaking of there........ I'll check and send you what I have.

<< This looks very interesting. However, if I understand what you're saying, the dates don't seem to match up. The John Bodine mentioned below (the grandfather of Nancy Ann Bodine) is probably not the brother of your Lewis P. Bodine. That would probably not work since John was born in the late 1700's, but Lewis was born in the 1840's. There does seem to be some kind of connection somewhere, though. Please let me know what you find out and if you get things to fit together.>>

Please keep in mind, I'm only beginning to sort out all the accumulated information I have and trying to make sure it fits and that the facts fit. Feel free to help!! I have collected census information on every Bodine I found, and have tons here that I haven't connected up yet.

Piecing together information from Ronnie Bodine, Ga., Jim Bodine's records (Clarence Bodine's too), Betty Strawther's records, and our own records.....

Betty Malone Strawther's Bodines, start with Daniel Bodin and Maria Croise, from France, 1600's...

I'm still straightening out Bodines -- for instance, I found marriage records for Lewis P. Bodine and Lurena Colvin, 1865, Miller Co., Mo. -- and on same page were his brothers and their wives (see below) -- I found a census record on a Joab Bodine that shows in census info, Tenn. 1850, as follows:
Joab Bodine - 31, housepainter NY
Pariah, 28, Va.
Andrew, 10, Tenn
James, 8, Tenn
Green B., 6, Tenn
Sarah, 4, Tenn
Mary, 1, Tenn.

My hypothesis is that this "Joab" might be James J. -- see below, and would appreciate comments.

From Ronny Bodine:

From Miller County, Missouri Marriage Records:
Lewis P. Bodine AND Miss Lurena Colvin were married 18 June 1865 by R. T. Booth.

The Bodine family was living 1880 in Osage Township, Camden County, Missouri. Lewis and Lue Bodine were living from 1900 in Dewey County, Oklahoma Territory. In 1900 and 1910, Lurana stated she had borne 10 children of who 9 were then living, but in 1900 only their daughter Julia, then aged 15, was living with them. Lewis was recorded on both occasions as Louis P. Bodine. In 1930, Luerany Bodine, age 82 and widowed, was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Alphesus Richardson in Taloga, Dewey County. Lewis and Luerany Bodine were buried in Oakley Cemetery, Dewey County.

The Last Will and Testatement of Lewis P. Bodine, Dewey County, Oklahoma, Will Book 2, pp. 120-121.
The will of Louis P. Bodine, of Thomas, Custer County, Oklahoma, written 15 May 1916, was proved 9 Nov 1925 and names his wife Lourance Bodine and appoints were executrix. Harsha (52), of Dewey County, Okla.; daughter Sarah E. Simel, of Clayton, NM; daughter Electy E. Davis, of Marlow, Okla.; daughter Julia A. Ellis, of Dewey County, Okla.; son James A. Bodine; daughter Elzery Smith of Custer County, Okla.; to grandchildren, children of my son John N. Bodine, deceased: Jesse Bodine, Andrew Bodine, Mrs. Anna Berry, Effie Bodine. [Note: The will apparently was dictated and his name was written as Louis, but signed as Lewis, and this distinction was also noted in the probate proceedings.]

On 26 Oct 1925, Lourane Bodine submitted a Petition for Probate of Will and therein listed the heirs as:
Lourane Bodine, 78, widow, of Taloga, Oklahoma
Rosa J. Watson, 59, daughter, of Bethany, Oklahoma
