Notes for: Elizabeth Thomas

Grave of Elizabeth Thomas Bodine

Elizabeth (Thomas) Bodine has "two stones." The one above is actually her stone and stands alone in Columbia Cemetery, Northwest Township, Williams County, Ohio. The inscription says, "Elizabeth - born in Penn, Nov. 29, 1804. Died in Ohio Jan. 27, 1891 - In remembrance of our dear mother." The stone below is that of Raphael Moss, her son-in-law. Raphael married Louisa Bodine. On this one stone are inscriptions for Raphael, Louisa, and Elizabeth. The inscription for Elizabeth is showing: Elizabeth Bodine - died Jan. 27, 1890 aged 85 y, 2 m. Raphael's inscription is on the front (July 27, 1894 - 63 y), Louisa's is to the right (wife - Aug. 15, 1837 - Sept. 29, 1905 68 y) and Elizabeth's is on the left. Raphael's grave is right next to Elizabeth's larger tombstone shown in the top picture.

From Leader Enterprise, 19 Feb 1891, Williams Co, OH:

Died: At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louisa Moss, near Columbia, Williams Co, Ohio Jan. 27, 1891, Mrs. Elizabeth Bodine; aged 86 years 1 month and 28 days.

Elizabeth Thomas was born in Pennsylvania, Nov. 29, 1804. At the age of seven years she came with her parents to Ohio. In 1824 she was married to Joseph Bodine. To them were born seven children, five of whome are still living.

Many years ago the husband and father passed over the river. The trials and sufferings of widowed life were many, but she trusted in the widow's God and bore all life's burdens with christian patience and resignation. For about seventy-two years she had been a member of the M. E. church. For nearly eight years she had been bedridden and helpless. The dearest treasure of her invalid bed was a volume of the New Testament in large and beautiful type to suite the aged eyes, presented to her by her physician Dr. A. Hathaway. A weary child has gone to rest. Funeral service held in Columbia M. E. church Jan. 28, 1891, conducted by Rev. F. M. Money."
