Notes for: James H. Bodine

He is six years old in the 1850 Census. His name is given as James "H." Bodine in the 1860 Census of Middlesex County, New Jersey (roll 699, p. 464). He is probably the James Bodine mentioned in the 1880 Census of Cranberry, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His wife is Maggie (29) and his children are Isaiah (8), John W. (5), Emerson (3), and Harry/Harrie (1). Everyone, including parents, were born in New Jersey.

James H. Bodine, father of Harry J. Bodine, was also a native of Princeton. The elder man was for many years a farmer just outside of his native place, and took an active part in the affairs of the community, having been chairman of the township committee there for many years. He was a Republican in politics, affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, and for many years was superintendent of the Sunday school of the First Methodist Church. A few years previous to his death, which occurred in 1893, he retired from business and came to Asbury Park for his health which, however, he did not regain and passed away at the early age of fifty-two years. He married Margaret A. Dey, of Plainsboro, New Jersey, and to them were born the following children: Isaiah, who is a conductor on the Pennsylvania railroad; John, a painter in Neptune City; Emerson, engaged in the produce business in Trenton; Harry James, of further mention; Mabel, deceased; Luella, wife of Charles Miller, stationary engineer in Astoria; Ada, who married Harry B. Pyle, of Los Angeles, California, where he is employed on the "Los Angeles Times;" Minnie, deceased.

J. H. Bodine died Sunday, July 24th, at his residence in West Asbury Park, aged 49 years. He leaves a wife and several children. The body was taken to Cranbury, Tuesday.

Mrs. Margaret A. Bodine, mother of Harry J. Bodine, a local funeral director, and a resident of this city for 30 years, died at 10:30 last night at her home, 633 Mattison avenue. Death resulted from broken arteries, from which she suffered for 11 years, diabetes and burst veins. For the past three years she had been blind. Mrs. Bodine was the widow of James H. Bodine and was born in Cranbury. At one time she conducted the Park cottage, the Melrose and the Gibson house, the latter being destroyed in the old opera house fire here some years ago. Mrs. Bodine was in the 70th year of her age. Besides the son already named she is survived by three other sons, two daughters and a sister. The sons are Isaiah and Emmerson of Trenton and John of this city. The daughters are Mrs. Luella Mayo of Astoria, L.I., and Mrs. Ada G. Pyle of Los Angeles, Cal., and the sister is Mrs. Gertrude Wyckoff of Manasquan. Funeral services will be held from the late residence Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock and Wednesday morning at 10.30 (eastern time) from the First Presbyterian church at Cranbury. Rev. T. P. Gates of this city and Rev. William Curry of Cranbury will officiate. Friends may view the remains Monday evening. Interment will be made at Cranbury.
