Notes for: Lewis Bodine

There is a Lewis Bodine who enlisted for the Union on August 16, 1862 in Pennsylvania. He was a second lieutenant. Chamber's book "Early Germans of New Jersey" says that Gilbert, Lewis' father, left one child and "has descendants in Illinois and Wisconsin" (p. 269). FamilySearch.com lists a Lewis Bodine born to Isaac and Mary Drake Bodine about 1819, "of Readington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey."

The Watkins Democrat of January 7, 1903 says this:
A Pioneer of Seneca County
Lewis Bodine, who died in the town of Ovid, in Decemeber, 1903, was born in 1820 on the farm where his death occurred. He was the only son of Isaac Bodine, the sixth son of Cornelius Bodine, a soldier of the Revolution, who came to Ovid and took up a military claim in 1801, and was the ancestor of the Bodine family in Seneca County. Lewis Bodine's mother was a daughter of Capt. Richard Drake. She died during his infancy and he was cared for by an aunt, Sarah Ann Drake. Mr. Bodine was twice married, his first wife, Ann Van Doren, having become the mother of his three children.

Another obituary, even longer, is found in The Gazette and Independent, Ovid, N.Y., from (maybe) December 30, 1903 on one of the inside pages:

The death of Lewis Bodine on the 18th of December, removes one of the best known of the older residents of the town of Ovid. Lewis Bodine was born in 1820 on the farm where he died. He was the only son of Isaac Bodine, sixth son of Cornelius Bodine, revolutionary soldier, who came to Ovid and took up a military claim in 1801, and who was the ancestor of the Bodine family in Seneca county. Lewis Bodine's mother was a daughter of Captain Richard Drake, who settled on the farm which afterward passed to Isaac and Lewis Bodine. Richard Drake's wife, Lewis Bodine's grandmother, was a sister of Rev. Abram Messler, third pastor of the Reformed church of Lodi, 1825-8. The mother of Lewis Bodine died while he was an infant, and he was cared for by an aunt, Sarah Ann Drake, during infancy. Lewis Bodine passed nearly his whole life on the farm where he was born, with the exception of five years, 1867-1872, spent in the west, and a brief period during which he lived on the neighboring farm belonging to Abram VanDoren. A daughter of Abram VanDoren, Ann VanDoren, became Mr. Bodine's wife October 27, 1842, and was the mother of his three children, Darwin C , who died in 1880; Louise Davenport, who died in 1879, and Jennie Bissell, who died in 1889. Mr. Bodine thus outlived by some years all of his children. After the death of his first wife he married Miss Martha Twedy of Washington, D. C , in 1891, who survives him. Six grandchildren are also living: Lewis T. Bodine, Ira Bodine and Charles D. Bodine; Nina Davenport Given, Harlena Bissell Hyrouamus and Louise Bissell. Mr. Bodine was a man who was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was an active member of the Ovid Center Grange. For many years he was an honored member of the Reformed church of Lodi, in which he successively filled the offices of deacon and elder. Altho in his 84th year he remained in good health up until the day of his sudden death, and was actively engaged in the management of his farm and other interests. His rectitude of character and cheerful and kindly disposition will render him greatly missed from the neighborhood and church.
