Notes for: John Henry Bodine

The 1900 Census of Monmouth County says both his parents were born in New Jersey (v. 49, ed. 126, sht. 27, ln. 59). His sister-in-law, Ellen Scandlin, was living with them. But the same Census says that Cyrus' wife, Mary (John's mother), was born in Ireland.

Obituary, The Jersey Journal (Jersey City, NJ) of Monday, 7 April 1941.
John H. Bodine, of 3 Madison Av., died today at the Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Long Branch, he had lived in Jersey City for the past 23 years. He was a painter and decorator. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Jennie Bodine, a son, John Bodine, a daughter, Mrs. Eugene J. Egan; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Stauffer and five grandchildren.

Obituary, The Jersey Journal (Jersey City, NJ) of Friday, 28 Nov 1947.
Mrs. Jennie Bodine, 67, was burned to death in her two-room apartment at 47 Lienau Pl., in the Hudson City section, when an oil stove explosion caused a fire to gut the basement rooms of the two and one-half story brick building. Firemen discovered the charred remains of the woman when making an inspection of the effects of the blaze, for which one alarm had been sounded. Dr. Hosier of the Medical Center ambulance staff made the death pronouncement. It was stated by police that Mrs. Bodine's clothes had become enveloped by the flames and she was smothered by fire and smoke. Neighbors told of the deceased woman's practice of being out of her home during the afternoon hours, so that when the fire started Wednesday afternoon there was no immediate fear for her personal safety. Although the blaze did not cause the firefighters any unusual trouble, it struck with swift devastation. In all, police at the Central Avenue station listed $500 damages, $200 to the building and $300 to the furnishings.
Mrs. Bodine (nee Scanlon) was born in Ireland and came to this country at the age of 10. Before coming to Jersey City 24 years ago, Mrs. Bodine resided in Long Branch, N.J. She was a communicant of St. Nicholas' Roman Catholic Church. Survivors are her son, John Bodine of Jersey City, a Public Service employe, and a daughter, Mrs. Alberta Egan of Lyndhurst. Five grandchildren also survive. Her husband, John Bodine, Sr., a painting contractor, died several years ago.

Burials in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Keyport, Monmouth County, New Jersey.
