Notes for: Elisha Bodine

He is probably the Elisha Bodine on the 1830 Census of Symmes Township, Hamilton County, Ohio (page 197). In 1840, he was probably in Ohio, but we're not sure where. In 1850, he was in Cincinnati (7th Ward), Hamilton Co., Ohio living with his son, Virgil B. Bodine. In 1860, he was with Margaretta in Rush Co., IN. And in 1870, he was with Lydia in Rush Co., IN.

It looks like Elisha married six times. See the Millspaugh genealogy for some more info on this topic. In a handwritten note, his grandson, George Emerson Bodine, said that his father's father (Elisha) had married six times. I have info that says Elisha also had a child named Elly Bodine who was born on April 2, 1829. She would not fit in with any of the six wives I have now for Elisha. This Elly Bodine actually appears to be Benjamin Bodine's wife, not Elisha's daughter. She is marked in the Bible records below.

Note: There was a rumor going around that the 1850 Census of Hamilton Co., OH says Elisha had been married to his wife Mary for about a year. That would not fit well with his marriage data. However, that rumor is not correct; the census does not say any such thing.

Here are the marriage records I have so far for this Elisha Bodine. These were sent to me by Denise Oliver-Velez.

Note by Dave Bodine: We are pretty sure that he is this Elisha Bodine.

I received this transcription of the Elisha Bodine family Bible from Denise Oliver-Velez (deoliver at pipeline.com) and Robin Toms (TOMSFAMILY at aol.com). They received this Bible record directly or indirectly from Helen Bodine (helenb at planetkc.com). This is what Helen said, "This is information that Aunt Anna hand copied from the family Bible. Maxine Taylor had her mother's copy, and I hand-copied it - not a copy machine. This is the same information that Denise Oliver has."

Note from Dave Bodine: I believe this means that the information below is a copy of another copy of the Bible. That would make the likelihood of mistakes quite high, but I don't know of anything myself.

Helen went on to say, "I hope this 'stuff' will be helpful. I have tried to key this in like the orginal copy--the spacing, spelling, and punctuation. Ellen Agusta Burns Born in Augusta Maine is not a typing error. My guess would be that they did not want her name spelled exactly like the name of the town. Sometimes 'Born' is capitalized and other times not--that is the way it is on the original copy. Same way with Augusta Maine with no comma between the city and state."

Note from Dave Bodine: I've adjusted a couple of things to make the list below a little easier to read. I have not made what I think are any significant changes.

There is an Elisha Boudine in the record below. I don't know who this refers to, but it is not this Elisha.

... Contract of Marriage between Thomas BROWN... and Sarah CARTER...
[w] Elisabeth MEEKER

From Ronny Bodine (Oct. 10, 2020):

From Records of the Brick Reformed Church, Montgomery, Orangte County, New York.
ELISHA, son of Francis Bodyn and Hannah Millard was born 27 Dec 1790.

1st marriage--1812--SUSANNAH COMFORT.
Foley, Early Settlers of New York State, p. 348, citing records of Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Orange Co., NY for her marriage on 12 March 1812.

See Genealogy Page of John Blythe Dobson at https://johnblythedobson.org/genealogy/ff/Comfort-Robert.cfm for details on the Comfort family which names her parents as John Comfort Jr. and Catharine Harris, that she was born about 1785 in Canada and died 16 July 1816 at Montgomery.

From Brick Reformed Church of Montgomery, Orange County, Baptisms, 1734-1840:
Eliza Catharine, born 28 March 1813 to Elisha Bodine & Susan Confort.
John Comfort, born 9 Sept 1814 to Elisha Bodine & Susan Comfort.
Francis Elsworth, born 26 Nov 1815 to Elisha Bodine & Sarah Decker [transcription error?]

Between Nov 1815 and Sept 1817, Elisha Bodine moved to Hamilton County, Ohio where he is first recorded in a deed:
Deed 16 Sept 1817 from Matthew Terwilliger of Hamilton County to Elisha Bodine of the same place, for $700, 60 acres in the northeast quarter of Section 35, Township 5, Range 1, in the Miami Purchase. Recorded 6 Dec 1819 in Hamilton County Deed Book T, p. 422.

From Campbell County, Kentucky Marriage Records:
Elisha Bodine and Sally Millspaugh were married 25 Feb 1818 by William Milspaugh.

The distance between Hamilton County, Ohio and Campbell County, Kentucky is only 37 miles.

Elisha Bodine appears continuously on the Hamilton County, Ohio tax lists from 1820 to 1838.

3rd marriage--1821--MARY STILES.
From Hamilton County, Ohio Marriage Records:
Elisha Bodine AND Mary Stites were married 28 June 1821 by D. Hayden, M.G.

Her name is spelled Stites in the marriage record but is recorded as Stiles in the family bible which also records her death on 9 Oct 1828 and the births of two children:
Benjamin Bodine on 10 June 1822
V.B. Bodine on 14 Nov 1826

About 1825 Symmes Township was created out of Sycamore Township, Hamilton County, Ohio.

1830 Symmes Twp., Hamilton Co., OH:

4th marriage--1830--MARY MITCHELL.
An original record of this marriage cannot be located. There is no record of this marriage in Rush County, Indiana. Of her three children, only Jeremiah left a death certificate, but the names of his parents were noted only as Unknown.

The family bible records three children born of this marriage:
Calvin Bodine on 18 March 1830
Lucetta Bodine on 12 Oct 1832
Jeremiah Bodine on 4 Dec 1835

Deed of 10 Sept 1831 from John D. Felter of Sycamore Township to Elisha Bodine of the same, for $1150, 55 acres in Sycamore Township. Recorded 21 Sept 1831 in Hamilton County Deed Book 38, p. 595.

The 1914 obituary of son Virgil Bodine in The Daily Republican of Rushville, Indiana states he moved to Dearborn County, Indiana in 1837 with his parents and in 1843 returned to Cincinnati, Ohio. As noted above, tax lists place Elisha Bodine in Symmes Township, Hamilton County through 1838, which is as far as these tax lists are available. His move to Dearborn County, Indiana is confirmed by The Dearborn County (IN) Democrat of 30 Oct 1839 which published a list of persons empaneled on a Grand Jury for the Dearborn Circuit Court and named Elisha Bodine among the jurors. Although he cannot be found on the 1840 census, he was still present in 1842 as appears in The Indiana Journal (Indianapolis, IN) of 9 Nov 1842, which notes Elisha Bodine on a list of petitioners, resident citizens of the district of Indiana, who filed their petitions to benefit from the bankrupt act, before the District Court in Indianapolis on 21 Nov 1842.

The return of Virgil Bodine to Cincinnati in 1843 must have been in the company of his parents as Elisha Bodine is again evident there in 1845:
Deed of 1 May 1845 of lease from Isaac Betts to Elisha Bodine for 9.999 years, lot 24 in square 13 in Betts division of squares, in Cincinnati, rent of $36 half-yearly due 1 Nov & 1 May. Recorded 15 Aug 1845 in Hamilton Co., OH Deed Book 104, p. 359.
