BERDINE, Peter (1814 - 1880)
FRANKLIN COUNTY (IOWA) RECORDER - 12/22/1880

Died, At his residence near Otisville, on Friday, December 10th, Mr. Peter Berdineof paralysis, at the age of 66 years. Mr. Berdine was born in Batavia, NY, in 1814, from which place he moved to Illinois 50 years ago, while there was yet no railroad west of Buffalo, NY. After a residence of nearly forty years in that state, he moved to Otisville and occupied the farm upon which he died. The deceased was a man of decided opinions and possessed of a clear cut individuality, always maintaining his positions with firmness and decided tenacity. He was scrupulously honest, a kind neighbor, and usually prompt in business matters. His clean, neat fields and abundant crops showed his large farm to be under the care of a careful and efficient husbandman. The body of the deceased was buried at the cemetery at this place on Monday last. The mourning relatives have the kindest sympathy in the irreparable loss of a kind husband and loving father.

Subject: Descendants of Peter Berdine

Hello, Dave,

I have tons of information on the descendants of Peter Berdine, b. 1815 in New York and his wife Lucinda Ellis b. 1823 in Pennsylvania. Peter was the son of Nicholas Berdine, b. 1793 in New Jersey, d. 1870 in Hebron, Porter, Indiana, and his first wife Sarah Waterman, b. 1791 in New York, d. 1831 in Cattaraugus, New York.

My husband is descended from this line.

Since I see from your web site that you welcome new submissions, how do you prefer to receive this information?

Thank you.
Teresa Walton

Subject: info about Peter and Matilda Berdine

Hello Dave,

I found the following information regarding 2 children of Nicholas Berdine Jr and Sarah Waterman in "Biographical Sketches of Richard Ellis the first settler of Ashfield, Mass and his descendants", compiled and arranged by E.R. Ellis, M.D. 1888.

William F. Ellis (son of Elder John Ellis of Ellicottville, NY) b. 1815, d. 1845 married Matilda Berdine b. 1818 d. 1845. They married in 1835, no place given. They both died in Cincinnati OH on the same night of cholera. Another year given in another section of the book (p.222) says the death year is abt. 1852 which isn't close to the 1845 given on p.52 of the book so both are suspect. Their two children, Fred (b.1840) Elizabeth (Lizzie)(b.1837) were "brought to Ellicottville, NY, and soon after their uncle Ralph [Ellis] took them to California. Lizzie Ellis married D.H. Berdine, a printer, and publisher of "Once a Week," a temperance journal." Interesting she married a Berdine - her mother's family name. They lived in Stockton, CA and had one child, Carrie E. born in OH in 1860. I find Daniel H. Berdine 45, Elizabeth 41 and Carrie E. (20, born in Ohio, schoolteacher) living together in Stockton, San Joaquin Co. in the 1880 census. Eliza (probably Lizzie) Berdine is listed in the 1900 Census in Stockton CA at age 62. So it appears Daniel H. Berdine died before 1900. And this puts Lizzie (or Eliza's) birth abt. 1835- the
source text says 1837 but I believe it should be no later than 1836.

I have been so far unable to find Fred, Lizzie's brother. Also, Daniel H. only appears in the above mentioned 1880 census. Would like to know his parents and birthplace.

Also from the Ellis source - Lucinda Ellis, born in PA in 1820, married Peter Berdine (date of birth given is 1816) in 1840 and lived in Wisconsin. They both died in 1881. Their 7 children, born in Iowa and Wisconsin were (no death dates):

Helen b. 1841, Hattie b. 1842, Henry b. 1848, Ralph b. 1849, Clara b. 1859, Carrie b. 1859, Ollie b. 1862.

Another very interesting line is that of Sarah Waterman, wife of Nicholas Berdine Jr. She was born ca.1789-1793, d. ca.1831, m. 29 Dec 1811 in Glen, Montgomery Co. NY according to "Mayflower Families Through Five Generation Vol.11 Part III" compiler Peter B. Hill. This source traces her line back six generations to Edward Doty of the Mayflower. I can send you the details of this if you wish. I have found it quite exciting. :) The Doty's (Doughty, Douty, or Doughtie in England) can be traced back several more generations to 1474, Pleasley, Derby, England.

More info coming later of details for our Julius Brainard Berdine descendants.....

Sincerely,
Virginia Buck Berdine
